Henderson and O’connell Delighted with Punchestowns
12/03/09

Nicky Henderson had no complaints after Punchestowns ran a fine race to take second place, beaten a length and three quarters, behind Big Buck’s in the Grade One Ladbrokes World Hurdle.

The Seven Barrows handler said: “He ran a great race. I think that is one all between us and the Stewart/Nicholls team this week!

“The horse stays, gallops and jumps. You would like to think he will make up into quite a chaser one day.

“He could go to Punchestown now. I am sure the racecourse would like him to go there one day and Lynn (Wilson, the deceased husband of owner Judy Wilson) always loved to go there.

“However, Punchestown is in early May this year and the ground could have turned against him by that stage. He doesn’t want it too fast.

“He will be going over fences next season.

“It’s a pity Big Buck’s didn’t take to chasing!”

A further 17 lengths back in third was Powerstation. The nine-year-old is trained in Ireland by Eamon O’Connell, who was originally involved with Powerstation as part of the Fat Frog Syndicate which owns the horse. O’Connell has eight horses in his care, having given up his job at airline Aer Lingus.

O’Connell said: “The front two pulled away from the last.

“I am delighted how the horse has run. We were hoping he might be in the first three so it’s job done.

“If he is OK after this, he will go to Punchestown.”

NO BLISS FOR KASBAH - NO EXCUSES FROM DOUMEN

Kasbah Bliss

Kasbah Bliss, supported to 10/11 favourite, faded tamely up the final Cheltenham hill to finish only fourth in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle, nearly 20 lengths behind the winner Big Buck’s. His trainer, Francois Doumen, seeking his seventh Festival winner, offered no excuses.

“Christophe [Pieux] said that he knew when they started to come down the hill that he wasn’t travelling well,” said Doumen.

“There was no reason for the poor run. The ground was good enough for everybody. He was fairly beaten and beaten by far, so to say that he travelled a bit wide, well, if he was beaten narrowly we could say that, but today he wasn’t close,” he added.

Doumen implied that the market may not have got it right: “To make him hot favourite like that because he had a wonderful comeback [at Haydock in February] and because he ran such a nice race at Longchamp and to be so sure that those two [Big Bucks and Puncestowns] were not better than him - I don’t know.”

Doumen had seen nothing that worried him before the race. “When he came to the races he was 200%. He was beaten very far. We have no excuse at all.”

The trainer will make no decision now about what is next for the horse - “we will do nothing in the heat of the moment” - but he does not expect Kasbah Bliss to race again in the UK this season.
