Trumpet Major Blows Away Craven Rivals 1 Trumpet Major 9/2 Richard Hannon's Trumpet Major gave weight and a considerable beating to his rivals in the Novae Bloodstock Insurance Craven Stakes at Newmarket. The Group Three prize was rendered a little less competitive by the withdrawal of the lame favourite Most Improved, but 9-2 chance Trumpet Major could hardly have been more impressive. The three-year-old had finished fifth in last season's Dewhurst Stakes, a couple of places behind Most Improved, and travelled ominously well throughout on this seasonal return. Once given the hurry-up by Ryan Moore, Trumpet Major's response was immediate and he quickly pulled clear of the opposition. His stablemate Crius got going late towards the rail, but Trumpet Major was easily best, coming home with five lengths in hand. Eastern Sun was on the front end the whole way and passed the post third. Richard Hannon jnr, the trainer's son and assistant, said: "He did that very well under a 3lb penalty. I wasn't sure he'd like the ground and he'll have needed it but he'll have to take his chance in the Guineas now. "This horse is more than capable of taking Harbour Watch's place, hopefully Harbour Watch will be ready for Royal Ascot. Crius ran a good race, he'll probably miss the English Guineas and tip-toe round abroad. "Bronterre (who runs in the Greenham Stakes on Saturday) will love the ground at Newbury but Best Terms won't run in the Fred Darling if it's heavy."
