![]() 24/11/2004 Keith Dalgleish, who shocked the racing community when quitting the saddle last July, makes a welcome return to the racecourse on Wednesday when partnering Hopeful Mission in the bumper at Lingfield. The Scotsman found an on-going battle with the scales too much when he left the Flat game, and a job with Mark Johnston, behind him and officially retired. The 21-year-old then had a few weeks off to contemplate his future and given his height of over six feet, decided to try his hand at jump racing. And Dalgleish takes his first step towards that goal when making his debut under jumps' rules for trainer Karl Burke in the HBLB Coloroll "Junior" Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race. " The plan is still for him to ride over fences but I couldn't say when that will be," his agent Richard Hale said. "He has been doing a bit of schooling around Middleham with Micky Hammond, Kate Milligan and others. " He is enjoying not wasting himself to bits everyday but this is a different discipline and he is starting from scratch and has to learn new skills. " With that in mind he doesn't want to start too early and make a false start, so a ride in a bumper should be a nice introduction and we can take it from there." |
