Total wagering on the 2005 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships
established a record of $122,106,154 from common and separate
pools from Saturday's 10-race card at Belmont Park. Garrett Gomez,
who won two races
on Saturday at Belmont Park in New York, was named the Bill Shoemaker
Award winner as the outstanding Breeders' Cup Jockey of 2005.
The 21th anniversary of the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships
was held at first time host track Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie,
Texas. The weather was hot and sunny with the temperature peaking
at 83 degrees around 4pm, but the track was sticky and heavy and
the turf yeilding from overnight rain. The main track gradually
dried out by the Juvenile, but for the early part of the card it
was so sticky it could suck the shoes off your feet if you walked
on it.
The 20th anniversary of the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships
was contested at a smoke-shrouded Santa Anita Park on Saturday,
October 25. It was very hot and sunny and smoke from the brush
fires in the nearby mountains obscured the famous backdrop of the
San Gabriel Mountains. Longshots were the order of the day as the
hot weather, the hard turf course, and the smoke and smog took
their toll on some of the more highly regarded entrants.
