01/05/2004 Smarty Jones made light of the sloppy conditions underfoot to retain his unbeaten record in the 130th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The son of Elusive Quality powered past the Michael Tabor-owned long-time leader Lion Heart to win by two-and-threequarter lengths, with Imperialism another four lengths back in third. It was a first Kentucky Derby win for owners Roy and Pat Chapman, trainer John Servis, and jockey Stewart Elliott. Smarty Jones paid $10.20 for a win, $6.20 for a place and $4.80 for a show. Lion Heart paid $8.20 for a place and $5.80 for a show. Imperialism paid $6.20 for a show. Lion Heart tried to go wire-to-wire under Mike Smith but had no answer to Smarty Jones' burst when Elliott unleashed him at the top of the stretch. Smarty Jones became only the fifth undefeated horse in 130 years, and the first since Seattle Slew in 1977, to win the Kentucky Derby. In the process he won his owners a US5million dollar bonus from Oaklawn Park for having already won the Rebel Stakes and the Arkansas Derby. Smarty Jones is only the second Pennsylvania bred to win the 'Run For The Roses', following Lil E Tee in 1992. Incredibly, the winner's jockey Elliott and trainer Servis were both participating in their first Kentucky Derby. Limehouse was fourth and The Cliff's Edge fifth. Michael Dickinson's runner Tapit finished a disappointing ninth. |
