Goodwood voted best-kept Flat Racecourse in 2003
17/2/2004

It’s official. Goodwood Racecourse has just been voted the UK’s best-kept Flat racecourse for 2003 in the Tote Neil Wyatt Groundstaff Awards.

Organised annually by the Racecourse Association, there are 3 National Awards for the best-kept Flat, best-kept Dual Purpose and best-kept National Hunt Track. Now in their 8th year, the Awards recognise the achievements of groundstaff throughout the UK’s 59 racecourses and were set up by Neil Wyatt, a long serving Jockey Club Inspector of Courses who thought it would be fitting to recognise this vital work.

Commented Rod Fabricius, Managing Director and Clerk of the Course at Goodwood Racecourse, “What a great way to start the year and a superb acknowledgement to all my groundstaff team for their stirling efforts. 2003 was a particularly difficult year with the heavy rain and flooding in the spring followed by the driest and hottest summer on record and would like to pay particular tribute to my Assistant Clerk of the Course, Seamus Buckley, who coped with this challenge and provided a first class track on all 21 days of racing. With the new flat racing season just around the corner and the weather conditions likely to be just as challenging, let’s see if we can win it again!”

Judging took place in early February and the panel comprised representatives from the Tote, the National Trainers Federation and the Jockeys’ Association, with support from the Jockey Club Inspectors. The Award was kindly sponsored by the Tote.
