This has long held its place as one of the more distinctive Classic trials, its undulating track and sweeping turns offering a searching examination for three-year-olds with Epsom aspirations. The 2026 renewal once again provides an opportunity for emerging middle-distance types to test both their balance and their potential at a crucial stage of the season.

Charlie Appleby has Royal Ascot in mind for his Feilden Stakes runner-up Poseidon’s Warrior, who could head to Lingfield for their William Hill-sponsored Derby Trial next. The son of  Sea The Stars impressed when a five-length scorer at Goodwood in his second start last season and he was a 9-5 favourite to make a winning return at Listed level at Newmarket. He found only William Haggas’ Morshdi too good and while a tilt at the Derby seems unlikely, Appleby feels there is plenty to look forward to.

He said: “He went off favourite and we still like him and William (Buick) said if he let him go he would probably have won, but we didn’t want to let him go as we’ve seen that bit of keenness about him at Goodwood and at home to be fair.

“William got him switched off and he’s crying out for a step up in trip. I was going to go to Sandown with him for the Classic Trial but sometimes they can just hack round there and we knew over this trip at Newmarket they would go a gallop and it would get the freshness out of him.

“He could go to Lingfield for the Derby Trial there. York would be a lovely track I would like to go for, but the Dante might be a bit too much for him and also the prelims might get to him. He got a bit warm with each turn at Newmarket so we might try to keep it simple for the next race or two.

“I think the King Edward VII could be the race for him later in the summer.”

That profile makes him a particularly interesting contender for Lingfield, where the ability to settle and handle the track’s unique demands is often as important as raw ability. His tendency to race keenly adds a layer of intrigue, but the step up in distance and likely strong pace could play to his strengths.

The Lingfield Derby Trial is rarely straightforward. Its tight turns and downhill run into the straight place a premium on balance and tactical awareness, often exposing those who lack experience or composure. Horses that can travel smoothly and maintain their position before quickening in the straight are typically favoured.

In that context, the race becomes as much about temperament as it is about talent. Those able to handle the preliminaries and settle into a rhythm early can gain a decisive advantage, while any signs of inexperience can be magnified by the track’s idiosyncrasies.

Poseidon’s Warrior may not be a Derby contender in the traditional sense, but this looks an ideal opportunity for him to confirm his potential and continue his progression. In a race that often rewards those with the right blend of ability and adaptability, he could prove particularly well suited to the challenge.

As ever with this contest, the result may not define the Derby picture outright, but it will undoubtedly add another piece to the evolving puzzle of the three-year-old season.
