Trained by Owen Burrows, the three-year-old Nakheel began the season as a maiden and has shown steady improvement in Pattern company.
After finishing third by four lengths to Scenic in the Galtres Stakes at York’s Ebor meeting, Nakheel seemed more comfortable with the additional two furlongs. Jim Crowley opted for an inside challenge, which had been avoided in the previous race, but it proved effective.
Ryan Moore appeared to have the upper hand on Grateful after last year’s winner, Sumo Sam, started to fade. However, Grateful’s stamina fell short when it mattered most. Nakheel, at 10-1 odds and wearing first-time cheekpieces, made her move for home and managed to hold off Night Sparkle by a length and a half.
Burrows commented, “Watching her at York, we thought the trip and a bit of ease in the ground would help, and the cheekpieces have certainly made a difference. She’s not ungenuine, but they helped her travel further and sharpened her up. She’s been progressing through Listed races, and this seemed like the right spot for her. She came off the bridle briefly but responded well, showing she had plenty left in the tank. We’ll discuss her future with Sheikh Ahmed, but from a trainer’s perspective, I’d love to have her back as a four-year-old. She’s still lightly raced, so we’ll see what’s next.”
