Orphee Des Blins
Ridden by Jan Faltejsek, best known in Britain for his association with the George Charlton-trained Knockara Beau, the 11-year-old put up a sterling display.

In a dramatic race, only a third of the field finished the gruelling extended four and a quarter mile course over 30 fences.

No horse could get to within a challenging position of the winner, who galloped the opposition into submission. Nikas was a long way back in second place, with Klaus third and Kasim fourth.

Grand National-winning jockey Liam Treadwell pulled up his mount Seslost, while Nick Williams' runner Shalimar Fromentro was one of the many fallers.

There was drama before the start when Zest For Life slipped up and unseated Sam Waley-Cohen. The pair were able to take part, but parted company at around halfway.

Zest For Life was one of three runners for Irish trainer Enda Bolger, who also saw Freneys Well and Mount Sion fail to complete.

Balthazar King

Balthazar King, trained by Philip Hobbs and ridden by Richard Johnson, won the 3m 6f Grand Cross Country De Craon on September 8.

The Jerome Follain-trained Quick Baby finished 2nd with Beuillac, trained by Guillaume Macaire in 3rd place.

Hobbs planned the French raid a while back and he and wife Sarah left Somerset at 6am on Saturday to make sure everything went to plan ahead of the race.

The win was Hobbs’ and Johnson’s first in France – and only their second runner there.

“Where he runs next depends on the ground,” said Hobbs, who flies back today.

“If it is not too soft I would expect him to line up at Cheltenham in November.”

Another Jewel, trained by Denis Murphy, winner of the race in 2011 was second with Bostons Angel, trained by Jessica Harrington in third.

Successful handler Peter Maher explained: "That's a win for all hunting men – myself and Barry are both hunting men.

"I'm based locally near Mondello – where they race the cars - so the horse would be well used to the noise.

"Cheltenham was pretty good but this is special as it's my home track.

"My girlfriend Caroline (Woods) spotted him in the sales. We bought him for Hugh Duffy who owns the greyhound stadium.

"He showed a bit of form in his younger days but then he had problems. He's just got better as he's got older – a bit of age you know – he's just a brilliant horse.

"He's won for me at Cheltenham and Punchestown now – we have enough of these races without travelling further afield."
