Shergar Cup |
All The News from the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Draw The draw for the 2011 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup was held yesterday at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in London’s Knightsbridge. The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is the world’s premier international jockeys’ team competition with four teams, each consisting of three jockeys, representing Great Britain (GBR), Ireland (IRE), Europe (EUR) and the Rest of the World (ROW). Line-ups for the four teams are as follows: Great Britain - Paul Hanagan (Captain), Hayley Turner, Jim Crowley Ireland - Richard Hughes (Captain), Fran Berry, Colm O’Donoghue Europe - Olivier Peslier (Captain), Christophe Lemaire, Mirco Demuro Rest of the World - Douglas Whyte (Captain), Yutaka Take, Hugh Bowman Ladbrokes, the official bookmakers to the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, make the Great Britain team 7/4 favourite after the draw and then go 5/2 Ireland, 7/2 Europe & 7/2 Rest Of The World. Britain has yet to win the competition since the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup became a four-team competition in 2007. Held at Ascot this Saturday, August 6, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup consists of a six-race programme, with 10 runners in each race. Each jockey will have a total of five rides throughout the afternoon with points awarded on a 15, 10, 7, 5, 3 basis for the first five horses home in each race. The team with the highest total after the six races have been run lifts the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup while the individual jockey who gains the most points will be awarded the Silver Saddle. The three international jockeys riding for the Rest of the World team were present at today’s draw - Douglas Whyte, the South African-born 11-times champion jockey in Hong Kong, Australian Hugh Bowman, who will shortly be returning Down Under after a second stint riding in Britain, and Japanese legend Yutaka Take. Whyte is the jockey in Hong Kong, having just won his 11th consecutive jockeys’ championship in the Chinese territory. The South African is recognised virtually everywhere he goes in Hong Kong, constantly asked for his autograph and about the chances of the horses he rides. But, with the Hong Kong season having ended on July 10, he is currently on his official holiday. This means he can relax to a certain extent and delight in the anonymity afforded by London. And the 39-year-old, who always has to watch his weight, is delighted to be involved in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup jockeys’ competition at Ascot on Saturday, August 6. It will be the fourth time that he as participated in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, following on from 2002, 2003 and 2006 so he is no stranger to Ascot and indeed finished third on South African champion London News in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at the 1997 Royal Meeting at the course. Whyte said today: “The Shergar Cup is unique in that it is a team effort rather than just an individual competition. “It is good because there is a different side to it. If you cannot win the race, then you are rooting for your team mates. “So albeit competitive individually, you are trying to win something as a team as well. It is a lot more relaxed.” He has been in London just over a week with his family and is keeping active. “The Shergar Cup is good because it also gets me out of bed in the mornings, keeps me running and mentally active. I am reading the papers, watching the television and everything to keep up to date. “It means I cannot let myself down which is good. I have to be careful with my weight as I am tall - 1.67 metres. “I have had a fantastic time here so far - the food is amazing in London and I certainly have to put in a bit of effort in (to counteract it). “My normal weight in Hong Kong is 120 (8st 8lb) and I generally ride there at 117 or 118 so I have to run in plastics or go in the sauna. “I don’t know what I am at the moment but I am a lot heavier than 120 and I hope my rides are at a decent weight on Saturday.” One of the pleasures of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup for jockeys involved is meeting other riders from around the world. Whyte explained: “Unfortunately in Hong Kong, I have a role to play. I have got a standard to set as I am an example to people so I don’t socialise with other jockeys there. I have to present myself in a professional manner. “When new guys (jockeys) come in I will go out and greet them - I am very respectful of them - but I never to get to go out with them but here I do and I can be more natural and enjoy it.” Whyte has broken the record for the number of winners ridden in Hong Kong and number of champion jockey titles and is naturally proud of those achievements. “I would like to stay and add to it - that is why I am so competitive. I am hoping it will be a good number of years before anyone can better the number of winners I have had in Hong Kong.” He first went to Hong Kong on a three-month licence back in 1996 and has spent 13 years in total riding there. Racing takes place on Wednesday evenings and Sundays during the season and he rides out six mornings a week. During the last nine Hong Kong seasons, he has ridden as a freelance after three attached to a stable. Even so, 80 per cent of his rides for the last four years have been for trainer John Size. The quality of horses racing in Hong Kong has steadily increased and he would love to ride at Ascot in a Group One race on a horse challenging from the former British colony. “Hong Kong racing has been the be-all and end-all of my career and the horses there are now doing well when going for big races in Japan, Australia, Dubai and elsewhere. “I am itching to get back to Royal Ascot with one or two horses.” The new Hong Kong season starts on September 11 and Whyte will return before the end of August to prepare for going after his 12th jockeys’ championship.
LATEST GOING Chris Stickels, Clerk of the Course at Ascot, reported at 1.30pm today: “The going was good at 8.00am this morning but since then we have had eight millimetres of rain. “I will give the rain a chance to soak into the track and then walk the course later this afternoon. I would think that the going is likely to ease.”
DETAILS OF THE DRAW FOR THE 2011 DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP The 10 runners in each race were ranked from 1 to 10 by form experts/odds compilers from Ladbrokes, the Official Bookmaker to the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. A complex formula was created to ensure that each of the four teams - Great Britain, Ireland, Europe and Rest of the World - received a balanced spread of higher and lower ranked/priced horses and, further to that, that each of the three jockeys representing each team also gets a balanced spread of higher and lower ranked/priced horses for his/her five rides.
