Victory for Team Ireland in Shergar Cup
07/08/10
For the second year in succession, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup went to Team Ireland, comprised this year of Captain Richard Hughes, Pat Smullen and Fran Berry. The final team scores were Ireland 80, Europe 72, Rest of the World 45 and Great Britain 43.
It was a doubly sweet afternoon for Fran Berry, as he claimed the Silver Saddle for leading jockey. Berry finished the competition with a total of 35 points, following a win on Bernie The Bolt in the St Hallett Shergar Cup Stayers and two second places.
The delighted 29-year-old said: “Today was a dream come true. I must be the happiest man alive to have finished second in the last race!
“I only got the call up to ride on Tuesday and today has exceeded my wildest expectations.
“I had a good draw with my rides today and was fortunate to get mounts for some excellent trainers. It was great to ride Bernie The Bolt for Andrew Balding, as the horse is owned by an Irishman.
“I think my ride in the last (Gene Autry in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint) might have won if the rain hadn’t arrived. He is a lovely progressive horse while Mr Simcock’s horse (Vainglory, runner-up in the Les Ambassadeurs Club Shergar Cup Mile) also ran well.
“Today was a real highlight for me.”
Richard Hughes, Captain for Team Ireland, said: “There was no winner for myself but the Team Ireland win is great for the lads. I can’t put it down to anything inspiring that I said! I am very proud of the team.”
Pat Smullen, the third member of the Irish team, added: “I am absolutely delighted, it was brilliant to win the competition. I would have love to have ridden a winner, but it was great just to be part of the winning team.”
DUBAI DUTY FREE RIDE OF THE DAY GOES TO LUKE NOLEN
The Dubai Duty Free Ride of the Day went to Australian Luke Nolen of Team Rest of the World for his victorious performance aboard Set The Trend in the Les Ambassadeurs Club Shergar Cup Mile. The judges for the competition were former jockeys John Reid and Joe Mercer.
Nolen said: “I will be speaking highly of Ascot when I go home.
“I would definitely like to come over again. We always bring over a few for Royal Ascot so maybe I will get a chance.”
