The Ribblesdale Stakes has often served as a proving ground for the best middle-distance fillies of the Classic generation, but this year the spotlight falls firmly on Juddmonte, whose formidable pair of Legacy Link and Gilded Prize dominate both the betting and much of the pre-race discussion.

Their combined presence even presented retained jockey Colin Keane with a difficult decision, one ultimately resolved in favour of Legacy Link after her outstanding effort in the Oaks at Epsom. Many expected the Musidora winner to head straight for a summer break or the Irish Oaks after chasing home the brilliant Thundering On, yet she emerged from Epsom in such excellent condition that connections opted for an unconventional but ambitious return just 13 days later.

For John and Thady Gosden, that confidence speaks volumes. Legacy Link not only proved her stamina at Epsom but arguably enhanced her reputation in defeat, shaping as a filly capable of winning at the highest level before long. A return to quicker ground is viewed as another positive and, on form, she sets a lofty standard.

Gilded Prize is set to be rerouted to the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot after connections opted to sidestep this weekend’s Prix de Diane.

That should not, however, diminish the prospects of Gilded Prize. Trained in France by Francis-Henri Graffard, she looked every inch a top-class performer when winning her first three starts before an inexplicably disappointing effort in the Prix Saint-Alary. Connections have been quick to dismiss that performance as unrepresentative and believe a step up to a mile and a half, allied to faster ground, could unlock further improvement.

The fact that Keane chose Legacy Link was understandable given recent evidence, but Oisin Murphy takes over on Gilded Prize and few would be surprised were she to bounce back with a performance much closer to her true ability.

Among those hoping to spoil the Juddmonte dominance is Earth Shot, whose profile continues to improve with every outing. Now racing in the colours of Wathnan Racing following her recent acquisition, she impressed on her seasonal return before narrowly failing to reel in Inis Mor in Listed company at Goodwood. That form received a significant boost when her conqueror subsequently finished third in the French Oaks, suggesting Earth Shot may be ready to take another step forward over twelve furlongs.

Ballydoyle’s sole representative is Composing, whose recent form figures perhaps understate her ability. A Group 2 winner as a juvenile, she now steps up in trip and is fitted with first-time blinkers in an attempt to reignite her campaign. Given Aidan O’Brien’s exceptional recent record in this race, she cannot be dismissed lightly despite appearing exposed.

The royal colours are carried by Golden Orbit, one of three runners from Ralph Beckett’s stable alongside Lady Roisia and Venetia. Beckett has long excelled with improving middle-distance fillies, making all three worthy of respect in what appears a highly competitive renewal.

Ireland’s challenge is further strengthened by Johanna Walsh, whose progressive profile makes her an intriguing contender, while Dark Lucinda arrives unbeaten after her Gowran Park maiden success and could easily improve for this sterner examination.

French interest comes through Warriors Whisper, while the Gosden team also fields the beautifully bred Brilliant Star, adding another fascinating dimension to an already deep field. Maldives completes the line-up as the outsider but represents the type of lightly raced filly capable of exceeding expectations in a race that often rewards latent potential.

With Legacy Link seeking to confirm her Oaks form, Gilded Prize bidding to restore her lofty reputation and Earth Shot arriving on the back of increasingly persuasive evidence, the Ribblesdale Stakes has all the ingredients of one of the week’s strongest contests. It may well prove not only a battle between talented fillies, but also a showcase for the remarkable strength in depth of Juddmonte’s current three-year-old team.
