GSTAAD is an emphatic winner of the Coventry Stakes 🏆#RoyalAscot pic.twitter.com/Bh10jyaUpv
In a performance that echoed the brilliance of his sire Starspangledbanner, Gstaad lit up Royal Ascot with a commanding victory in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, cruising three lengths clear of a 20-strong field and announcing himself as the latest jewel in the Ballydoyle crown.
Unbeaten in two starts, the strapping colt had shown raw talent when overcoming greenness to score on debut at Navan. But here, under a measured and confident ride from Ryan Moore, he looked a colt transformed—cruising down the centre of the track, isolated from the pack but unflustered, galloping relentlessly through the final two furlongs to leave a field of smart juveniles in his wake.
Outsiders Do Or Do Not and Coppull ran career-bests to chase him home for Ed Walker and Clive Cox, but the spotlight belonged to Gstaad—both for the performance and the promise.
The victory handed Aidan O’Brien an astonishing 11th Coventry Stakes success, and in the absence of the injured Albert Einstein, it appears the Ballydoyle baton has passed seamlessly to another potential star.
“He looks a very good horse, doesn’t he?” said a visibly delighted O’Brien. “He’s big, scopey, and has a huge stride. He’s very genuine and has always worked like a proper one. You’d think he’ll stay further too, which gives us lots of options.”
There was particular praise for Moore’s ride:
“Ryan was very positive—he let him find his rhythm and the colt did the rest. He’s only had the one run, but he’s clearly learned plenty. We’re very lucky to have horses like him.”
Asked about future targets, O’Brien didn’t blink:
“Group Ones? I’d imagine so.”
As for the sidelined Albert Einstein, O’Brien was wistful:
“He’s the most different horse we’ve ever had—so quick and so big. Something very special.”
For Ed Walker, runner-up Do Or Do Not offered a pleasant shock:
“I was ready to run him in a novice at Carlisle! Full credit to the owner, Simon Sadler—he rolled the dice. He’s such a laidback horse at home, you wouldn’t know what you’ve got—but both Hector and Tom have said he’s smart.”
On a day when pedigrees, potential, and poise collided on the grandest stage, it was Gstaad who stood tallest—his Royal Ascot triumph as emphatic as it was elegant.
