Baccarat lands the Wokingham for Richard Fahey by a length and a half.
Apprentice George Chaloner, the day after having his first Royal Ascot ride, enjoyed his first Royal Ascot winner on Baccarat in the £175,000 Wokingham Handicap over six furlongs on the final day of Royal Ascot.
9/1 chanced Baccarat, second in two runs this year, went clear in the final furlong, winning by a length and a half from Professor (10/1), Rivellino (25/1) and stable companion Alben Star (16/1).
Chaloner said: "The boss (Richard Fahey) said keep it simple and you'll have a chance. It feels amazing to have a first Royal Ascot winner. I am really grateful to the boss and (owner) Sir Robert Ogden for putting me on him - I really appreciate it.
"The boss said: "get plenty of cover and see how it goes - he's got the ability to win and I don't see why he wouldn't". Baccarat gave me a good ride the last day at York - he finished a nice second - and he's gone one better today. There might be more to come."
Richard Fahey commented: "It is always great after the race but he is a horse I felt would always win one of these races. I thought that he would win the Ayr Gold Cup last year but it just didn't happen. Today everything has gone right and it's fantastic for him.
"He is a decent horse and you get frustrated. I remember training a horse like him a few years ago, Superior Premium, and I tried to win a Wokingham with him. He kept finishing placed in the Ayr Gold Cup and, in the end I thought that we would let him take the deep end and he ended up winning the Jubilee here. This is a similar type of horse, he's a talented horse.
"It would have been better to get a winner earlier in the week because you go home, kick the yard cat and get a bit frustrated. Any winner here is fantastic.
"It's brilliant for George. He's a kid, he's probably only got five or six winners left in his belt (Chaloner claims 3lb currently) and he needs big winners like this to project him into the jockeyship and hopefully a few people will have looked at him and thought this kid can ride.
"I am delighted. I knew the winner would come up the stands' side and I just hoped it would be one of mine. If I had to pick one, it would have been Baccarat as he is probably the better horse and he showed that today. George did get there sooner than I would have liked but the horse has gone away and won it well.
"Baccarat is a horse probably capable of better but that is what you need to win these sort of races. He likes a flat-out pace. He won the St Wilfrid last year and was a bit unlucky last time at York. We will step him up in class now. Alben Star has run out of his skin to be fourth. Sir Robert was at Royal Ascot earlier in the week but not today."
Professor ran a big race under a welter weight to finish the length and a half second behind Baccarat.
The 10/1 shot couldn't quite match the finishing kick of the winner but stayed on well to fill the runner-up berth.
"He's run a super race," said Richard Hannon snr, father of trainer Richard Hannon.
"He's carried a big weight and that's not easy to do in these races. We're very happy with him."
Rivellino finished a further three quarters of a length back in third and trainer Karl Burke was also happy with the way his gelding ran.
"He's run a great race and we couldn't ask any more of him," said Burke.
"We'll keep going with him and there's a nice handicap at Newmarket's July meeting so we'll head there next."
