    Newfangled Impressive in Albany Stakes
    22/06/12

    1 Newfangled 7/4F
    2 Agent Allison 6/1
    3 Premier Steps 25/1
NR: Kosika (USA), Run Fat Lass Run, Sandreamer (IRE), Sendmylovetorose, Threes Grand
    14 ran Distances: 2½l, shd, 1¾l
    TIME 1m 16.78s (slow by 3.78s)

Newfangled made every yard of the running to win the Albany Stakes by two and a half lengths. But though the result may have been expected - the filly started 7/4 favourite - its execution was not.

    Newfangled

The refusal of Kosika to enter the stalls, and then Sendmylovetorose’s withdrawal after she went down after being installed, caused the start to be delayed. “Our plan with her had been to settle in behind the pace,” said Gosden, “but she had other ideas. With the delay I think she got a bit bored waiting and when the gates opened she broke on top.

“And as well as that the others seemed to take back because of the strong headwind - like a Formula One drive, jockeys want to sit in a slipstream - and William [Buick, rider] just let her run. She’s got a lot of speed and class.”

Newfangled is now two from two, having won on her debut at Newmarket two weeks previously. “We’ve always liked her,” added Gosden, “she’s been very athletic from the word go. She did this well, and with minimum training; because she’s so athletic she’s the sort it would be easy to overtrain. She’ll have a little holiday now and then it will be the Lowther and Cheveley Park Stakes route.”

The daughter of New Approach is now favourite for next year’s 1,000 Guineas. “On today you’d say she wasn’t a miler,” said Gosden “but at home she looks like she’d do any trip because she settles. But today was just a bit of a razzamatazz day and she decided to go. It’s my job now to settle her down again.”

BUICK KNOWS HIS PLACE IN MAN VERSUS HORSE

Royal Ascot, a shrine to tradition, welcomed a Newfangled presence today.

A filly, by young stallion New Approach, Newfangled was an impressive winner of the Albany Stakes in the colours of Princess Haya of Jordan. The filly was bred by Darley, the breeding arm of the Princess’s husband, Sheikh Mohammed, and trained by John Gosden.

His stable jockey, William Buick, rode the filly, who was soon dictating the pace, pulled clear, but was being slowly reeled back in the closing stages. She still won by two and a half lengths from Agent Allison, who beat Premier Steps by a short-head for the runner-up spot.

Buick said: “I was a passenger through the early stages of the race, which wasn’t the plan in a strong headwind.

“Down at the start I decided to drop in behind one or two other runners, but she jumped from the gate quickly and there was nothing else in front of her. If you try to fight a racehorse there is only ever one winner, and that’s the horse.

“So I let her run in my hands and she picked up really well when she needed to. She is a very good filly and all quality. She has been showing us all the right signs at home and she won nicely at Newmarket on soft ground before coming here.

“She might well develop as she gets stronger and could get a mile next year.

“I’ve liked her all along and it’s especially nice to have another winner at Royal Ascot for Princess Haya.”

    ALLISON NO MATCH FOR WINNER

The trainers of both second-placed Agent Allison and the third Premier Steps were hugely impressed by Albany Stakes winner Newfangled.

“The winner looked very good,” said Agent Allison’s handler Peter Chapple-Hyam. “We’ve come from a long way back and I think she was last at one stage but she likes fast ground.

“Our’s is a decent filly and will win her races but she needs to step up to seven furlongs now then look for mile races later in the year.”

Tom Dascombe, who saddled Premier Steps, said: “The winner is obviously very good and well done to them because our’s is no mug. I thought we had a much better chance than her 25/1 odds suggested. We’ll need to win a black-type race so we’ll look for a Listed contest somewhere, either over six furlongs on slow ground or seven furlongs if it’s quicker.”
