VODAFONE DERBY CONTENDERS BOOSTED BY 12
The premier colts' Classic, the Vodafone Derby, has attracted
12 colts at the second-entry stage, it is announced today,
Tuesday, April 11, 2006.
Both of the world's two most powerful bloodstock empires,
Coolmore and Godolphin, have added colts to the Vodafone Derby
which is run over 12 furlongs at Epsom Downs on Saturday, June
3.
There are six more from champion Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien,
representing various Coolmore partnerships, in Benjamin
Franklin,
Frost Giant, George Washington, Pescatorio, Poseidon
Adventure and Road To Mandalay.
George Washington is the hot favourite for the first colts'
Classic, the Stan James 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 6,
while the promising pair of Frost Giant and Poseidon Adventure
plus three unraced colts - Benjamin Franklin, Pescatorio and
Road To Mandalay - are the others up for Vodafone Derby glory.
They join 19 other O'Brien-trained horses, including ante-post
favourite Horatio Nelson, already in the Vodafone Derby which
is the richest race in Europe, being worth £1.25 million.
Godolphin has put in two colts - Palace
Episode and Winged
Cupid - at the second-entry stage, increasing its overall Vodafone
Derby strength to 26.
Both were purchased privately by the Maktoum family's entity
after excellent two-year-old campaigns - Palace Episode won
the Group One Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster in October from
Winged Cupid.
Andre Fabre, champion French trainer again in 2005, has added
two colts - the Sean Mulryan-owned Linda's
Lad and the Aga
Khan's Visindar - to the Classic.
Linda's Lad is a Group One winner, having captured the 10-furlong
Criterium de Saint-Cloud on November 12, while Visindar showed
great promise when winning his only race, also at Saint-Cloud
on the same day, and has proved popular with bettors in recent
days.
The two other second-entry stage additions are the Alan Jarvis-trained
Awatuki and Championship Point from Mick Channon's stable.
The former was the easy winner of a Kempton maiden on his seasonal
debut last month, while the latter won two of his three starts
in 2005 including the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot at York.
There is one further entry stage for the Vodafone Derby, following
on from the yearling and second-entry ones, on May 29. This
is the supplementary entry stage which costs £75,000.
Stephen Wallis, Managing Director of Epsom Downs Racecourse,
commented: "The 12 additions to the Vodafone Derby mean
that we have 144 three-year-olds still on target for the premier
Classic. This tremendous figure demonstrates the appetite for
Classic glory and the build-up to the 2006 Vodafone Derby will
be fascinating."
There will be an opportunity for all trainers with intended
runners in the Vodafone Derby, Vodafone Oaks and Vodafone Coronation
Cup to bring their horses for a practice gallop on the course
on Thursday, May 25. Last year, Motivator and Walk In The Park
had spins around the track in the build-up and they finished
first and second in the 2005 Vodafone Derby.

AWATUKI (IRE)
3 b c Distant View (USA) - Itkan (IRE) (Marju (IRE))
Form: 52-1 Owner: Allen Pope & Andrew King
Trainer: Alan Jarvis Breeder: Yeomanstown Stud
A 125,000 guineas yearling purchase at Doncaster Sales, trainer
Alan Jarvis described Awatuki as: "the best yearling I
had seen in 20 years". The colt made his racecourse debut
in a six-furlong Newbury maiden in July, 2005. Although slowly
away and showing signs of greenness, he caught the eye by staying
on into fifth place, three lengths behind the useful Bonnie
Prince Blue.
Taken to Newcastle for his second outing on August 12, he
was an unlucky runner-up to Chris Corsa over seven furlongs.
Trapped on the rail with a quarter of a mile to run, Awatuki
had to be switched wide and ran on gamely for a one and a half
length defeat.
The colt made an impressive start to his Classic season on
March 27, with a resounding triumph in a 10-furlong maiden
on Kempton's Polytrack. He crossed the line five lengths clear
of Vodafone Oaks entry Virgin Islands, with a further one and
a quarter lengths back to Dragon Dancer.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (IRE)
3 b c Danehill (USA) - Adjalisa (IRE) (Darshaan)
Unraced Owner: Derrick Smith, Sue Magnier & Michael Tabor
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE Breeder: Adjalisa Syndicate
An unraced son of Danehill, Benjamin Franklin is the seventh
foal of his dam who is herself a half-sister to the classy
miler Adjareli. His half-brother, Access All Areas, was a smart
five furlong-winning juvenile who, as a three-year-old, went
on to finish third in the nine-furlong Group Two Budweiser
International at The Curragh in 1999.
Aidan O'Brien has stated that the promising colt, an 85,000
guineas yearling, is likely to start off over a mile, but he
expects him to stay further.
CHAMPIONSHIP POINT (IRE)
3 b c Lomitas - Flying Squaw (Be My Chief (USA))
Form:112- Owner: John Livock Bloodstock Limited
Trainer: Mick Channon Breeder: Mount Coote Stud
Championship Point made a winning racecourse debut at Newbury
on May 14, 2005, when he showed considerable tenacity in out-battling
Genari for a head verdict in a six-furlong maiden.
Stepped up to seven furlongs for the Listed Chesham Stakes
at Royal Ascot at York, he showed great courage to come between
horses and lead inside the last furlong to maintain his 100
per cent record by three quarters of a length, at the expense
of Global Genius.
Championship Point's latest start came at Deauville in August
where, unsuited by the very soft going, he nonetheless ran
with great credit to finish the head runner-up to subsequent
Group One Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Linda's Lad, who
has also been entered in the Vodafone Derby at this second
stage. Although by a stamina influence in Lomitas, he is out
of a Group Two six-furlong winning two-year-old.
FROST GIANT (USA)
3 ch c Giant's Causeway (USA)- Takesmybreathaway (USA) (Gone
West (USA))
Form: 31- Owner: Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith & Sue Magnier
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE Breeder: J M J Stables Corporation
Being from the family of the champions Assatis and Rhythm,
and sired by the "Iron Horse", Giant's Causeway,
it was no surprise that Frost Giant cost his owners $600,000
as a yearling.
He made his debut at Doncaster on October 21, 2005, but managed
only third in a seven-furlong maiden run on soft ground, finishing
five lengths behind the victorious Shelhom.
Having learnt considerably from that first effort, he went
to Leopardstown 10 days later for the Group Three Killavullan
Stakes. He made light work of the heavy ground and four opponents
as he came home three lengths clear of the smart and consistent
Abigail Pett.
GEORGE WASHINGTON (IRE)
3 b c Danehill (USA) - Bordighera (USA) (Alysheba (USA))
Form: 31111- Owner: Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor & Derrick
Smith
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE Breeder: Lael Stables
A 1,150,000 guineas yearling purchase and the most expensive
of his generation in Europe, George Washington had a lot to
live up to. A half-brother to multiple 10-furlong Group One
winner Grandera, he repaid that outlay with a spectacular juvenile
campaign that saw him collect four victories from five starts,
and end the season as the top-rated two-year-old in Europe.
A debut defeat at Newmarket in May, 2005, was followed by
four straight victories at The Curragh, commencing with a maiden
win later that same month. In June he stepped up in class and
duly defeated Amigoni in the Group Two Railway Stakes over
six furlongs.
He then scored a brace of stunning Group One wins, firstly
when defeating stablemate Amadeus Mozart by eight lengths in
the Phoenix Stakes, and latterly in the National Stakes over
an extra furlong on September 18, when he overcame a slow start
to take victory by two lengths from Golden Arrow.
LINDA'S LAD
3 b c Sadler's Wells (USA) - Colza (USA) (Alleged (USA))
Form: 221211- Owner: Sean Mulryan
Trainer: Andre Fabre FR Breeder: The Niarchos Family
A stoutly-bred individual, Linda's Lad ended the 2005 campaign
with victory on heavy ground in the Group One Criterium de
Saint-Cloud over 10 furlongs on November 12. He displayed courage
on that occasion as he rallied close home, after being headed,
to take the spoils by a length from Fauvelia.
His career began in July with runner-up finishes over seven
furlongs at Deauville and Compiegne, before he broke his maiden
at the third attempt in August. That victory came on very soft
ground at Deauville in a mile Listed contest, beating Championship
Point by a head.
A narrow defeat to subsequent Group One winner Carlotamix followed
in the Group Three Prix des Chenes at Longchamp in September,
but he returned to winning ways with a short-head victory in
the nine-furlong Group Three Prix de Conde at the Parisian
track in October, before going on to Group One success the
following month.
PALACE EPISODE (USA)
3 b/br c Machiavellian(USA) - Palace Weekend (USA) (Seattle
Dancer (USA))
Form: 11351- Owner: Godolphin
Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor Breeder: C W Clay & Runnymeade
Farm
Palace Episode capped a superb year in 2005 for trainer Kevin
Ryan when landing the Group One Racing Post Trophy over a mile
at Doncaster in October. He won that contest, on heavy ground,
by a length and a half from Winged Cupid, with Septimus back
in third.
Palace Episode, a son of the late Darley stallion Machiavellian
out of an unraced half-sister to high-class US 10-furlong performer
Tejano Run, was purchased by Godolphin after that Group One
triumph, which followed a creditable fifth behind Sir Percy
in the seven-furlong Darley Dewhurst Stakes.
The way his season ended was a far cry from his debut victory
over six furlongs in the modest surroundings of Catterick in
July. This was followed a month later by a one and a quarter
length victory over Araafa in the seven-furlong Listed Acomb
Stakes at York, before he suffered the first of his two defeats
when third to Leo in the Group Two Royal Lodge Stakes over
a mile at Newmarket in September.
PESCATORIO (USA)
3 b c Storm Cat (USA) - Morning Devotion (USA) (Affirmed (USA))
Unraced Owner: Sangster Family, Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE Breeder: Swettenham Stud
Pescatorio, an unraced son of Storm Cat, is a brother to Some
Kind Of Tiger, a seven-furlong winner at two.
He is also a half-brother to dual-Classic winner Balanchine,
who took the Vodafone Oaks and Irish Derby in 1994, high-class
middle-distance horse Romanov, who was third in the 1997 Vodafone
Derby, and 1992 Sun Chariot Stakes winner Red Slippers.
POSEIDON ADVENTURE (IRE)
3 b c Sadler's Wells (USA) - Fanny Cerrito (USA) (Gulch (USA))
Form: 214- Owner: Sue Magnier And Michael Tabor
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE Breeder: Tower Bloodstock
Poseidon Adventure showed progressive form in three starts
at two, which yielded one win, a second and a fourth.
The Sadler's Wells colt was the runner-up on his debut in
a 16-runner maiden at Tipperary in September over an extended
seven furlongs, going down by a length and a half to Wilman.
He then headed to England for his second start the following
month where he lost his maiden tag in a mile contest at Newbury,
defeating Zaif by three-quarters of a length.
On his final start on October 30, he ran respectably in Group
One company, finishing fourth of six in the Criterium International
at Saint-Cloud over a mile on soft ground, beaten under six
lengths behind the winner Carlotamix.
ROAD TO MANDALAY (IRE)
3 b c Galileo (IRE) - Child Prodigy (IRE) (Ballad Rock)
Unraced Owner: Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith & Sue Magnier
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE Breeder: Dermot Brennan And Associates
Ltd
Road To Mandalay, from the first crop of 2001 Vodafone Derby
hero Galileo, cost 420,000 guineas as a yearling and has yet
to see a racecourse.
He is a half-brother to Meuhin, winner over a mile at two,
Du Pre, a mile winner at three, and Heidi's Dash, a five-furlong
winner at three.
His dam, a six-furlong winner at two, is a half-sister to the
top-class Kutub, a multiple winner between nine and 12 furlongs,
who scored three times at Group One level.
VISINDAR
3 ch c Sinndar (IRE) - Visor (USA) (Mr Prospector (USA))
Form: 1- Owner: H H Aga Kgan
Trainer: Andre Fabre FR Breeder: M Lagadere
A product of two great breeding empires, Visindar is by the
Aga Khan's 2000 Vodafone Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe
hero Sinndar, out of the Lagadere family's mare Visor, who
has produced seven individual winners, including a trio of
Group One-placed individuals.
Visor's Linamix filly, Visorama, landed the Group Three Prix
de Flore over an extended 10 furlongs and was third to Gamut
in the 2004 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, while her full-siblings,
Visionnaire and Visionary, were placed in the Poule d'Essai
des Poulains and Prix de Diane Hermes respectively.
Visindar made a late start to his career in a Saint-Cloud
maiden on November 12. The colt displayed considerable potential
in the mile contest - his sole outing to date - as he spreadeagled
17 opponents on heavy going, emerging the easy four-length
victor over Kouloubali.
WINGED CUPID
3 b c In The Wings - Sweet Emotion (IRE) (Bering (IRE))
Form: 112- Owner: Godolphin
Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor Breeder: Longfield Stud
Trainer Mark Johnston saddled Winged Cupid to land two wins
from three starts last year. The colt started out at Sandown
in August with a clear-cut mile maiden success on good to firm
going, winning by one and a half lengths from Brave Fight.
Winged Cupid scored again at Newbury the following month in
a competitive renewal of the Haynes, Hanson And Clarke Conditions
Stakes, defeating the well-regarded Shahin by two lengths.
That victory put him on course for a tilt at Group One company
and he duly proved his class in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster
in October, when runner-up to Palace Episode.
Godolphin subsequently purchased Winged Cupid, who is by 1990
Breeders' Cup Turf winner In The Wings, out of an unraced half-sister
to the classy sprinter/milers Great Commotion and Lead On Time.
