Gamble on 2000 Guineas hope Most Improved Continues
16/04/12

The Brian Meehan-trained Most Improved, a 20/1 shot in the ante-post market in Qipco 2000 Guineas betting, just two weeks ago, is now a general 5/1 second favourite as money continues to pour in for the son of Lawman, writes Elliot Slater.

Most Improved

Aidan O’Brien’s Group 1 Racing Post Trophy winner, Camelot (5/2), remains a warm favourite for the first colts’ classic of the British Flat season, but there have been suggestions that he is not a definite starter. The uncertainty surrounding Camelot has doubtless helped fuel the already growing gamble on Most Improved, a horse who showed progressive form in three racecourse appearances, last term.

Owned by Iraj Parvizi, Most Improved made his racecourse bow on the July course at Newmarket in August, where he shaped with tremendous promise in failing by just a short-head to justify 9/4 favouritism in a seven furlong maiden.

Having done everything right under Martin Dwyer, after coming through to lead at the furlong marker, he was caught in the very last stride by Frankie Dettori’s mount Kinglet, a horse who went on to win the Group 3 UAE 2000 Guineas at Meydan in February.

Putting that first experience to good use, Meehan’s talented performer then routed 14 rivals in a return visit to Newmarket, three weeks later, beating Welcome Gift by five lengths. He then stepped up into Group 1 company for the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes, where he held every chance at the furlong pole but was unable to quicken in the closing stages. He finished a brave third to Jim Bolger’s Parish Hall and Aidan O’Brien’s Power.

The form has a rock solid look about it with Power having won at Royal Ascot, earlier in the term, before landing the Group 1 Goffs National Stakes at the Curragh in September. Visit the Betfair Epsom Derby page for more information on the horseracing calendar.
