Legacy Link booked her place in the Betfred Oaks with a determined victory over Felicitas in a thrilling renewal.

Fourth in last season’s Fillies’ Mile, Legacy Link was sent off the 6-4 favourite under Colin Keane and the Juddmonte number one was content to settle just behind the early pace as Moments Of Joy and Sea The Storm led the field along the Knavesmire.

Ed Walker’s impressive Sandown winner Felicitas travelled strongly throughout and was never far away from the favourite. Keane made the first move entering the straight as Legacy Link quickened smartly past the leaders, but Kieran Shoemark was immediately in pursuit aboard the 5-2 second favourite.

The pair engaged in a prolonged duel inside the final furlong, with Legacy Link showing plenty of determination to repel her rival by three-quarters of a length in a finish worthy of the feature event.

The victory provided John Gosden with a ninth Musidora Stakes success and a third in partnership with son Thady, moving Gosden level with Sir Henry Cecil as the race’s most successful trainer.

Gosden said: “She did well. She was a little green early on, fresh first time out and broke away from the others on the outside.

“She got herself organised and then got on the wrong lead around the bend, so she’s still learning a bit.

“What I liked was that she came through the race, looked like she’d done enough and then the second filly came to her. That’s a very nice filly too – I thought she was superb at Sandown the other day.

“To that extent it looked a very good trial and I liked the way she battled back and saw it out strongly.”

Betfred cut Legacy Link to 5-1 from 8-1 for the Oaks and connections are now considering a visit to Epsom ahead of the Classic.

Gosden added: “Colin feels she should go to Epsom. We have the Prix de Diane as an option, but all being well she’ll head to Epsom.

“She has a great mind but was short of match practice. I think she can do nothing but improve for the race and we may take her to the gallops morning at Epsom.

“If she’s in good order she can have a spin around Tattenham Corner and learn about the track at three-quarter pace.”

Shoemark was pleased with the effort of runner-up Felicitas and said: “That was a huge run and she’s a very exciting filly. It was only her third start so we’re delighted with her.

“I’m not convinced she wants much further, but something like the Prix de Diane could be an option.”

K Sarra stayed on strongly into third for Ralph Beckett and jockey Rossa Ryan said: “She stayed on nicely and her pedigree suggests she’ll get a mile and a half.

“She was very green throughout the race, but from about a furlong and a half out the penny started to drop.

“It’s fair to say if there had been a little further I might have got there. She’s definitely progressing the right way and she’s a bit more relaxed than her brother, Pride Of Arras.

“Hopefully she’s got a very good future.”
