Winner of the 2015 Stewards' Cup at Glorious Goodwood before a fine third in the Haydock Sprint Cup, Charlie Hills' Magical Memory made a winning return to action despite having reportedly needed the run in the Abernant Stakes last month.

The benefit of that outing was seen as he powered through the race on the far side, settling nicely off a scorching gallop set by Goken, and while the improving Suedois (12/1) threw down a sustained challenge there was little doubt over the outcome inside the final furlong.

In the end, Magical Memory won by half a length from Suedois, with Danzeno (11/2) - who hung left as he has before - a further length back in third.

Dettori said: "You have to time it quite right with him because he gets there quick and then he stops - he thinks he's got the job done.

"If he keeps on progressing like this, he should win a Group One."

Hills, speaking on Racing UK, added: "He's been an absolute superstar, this horse, and he's still improving, for sure.

"He's really enjoying what he's doing. He really has got a great cruising speed.

"Frankie gave him a lovely ride. He kept it pretty uncomplicated."

Twilight Son, who had beaten the winner on all three previous meetings, was outpaced and off the bridle early under his penalty for winning the Sprint Cup but ran on for fifth on his first start in over six months.

Sky Bet cut Magical Memory to 6/1 clear market leader for the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot, with Twilight Son eased to 7/1.

"The way Magical Memory travelled through the race really impressed us and he goes to Royal Ascot with every chance," said the firm's Michael Shinners.

"Twilight Son is obviously entitled to be right back alongside his old rival with this behind him but maybe Magical Memory has improved again over the winter."
