Military Order emerged victorious, denying Lord North a second win in the race at its new home in Southwell.

Lord North, now eight years old, was competing in this race for the third time, having previously finished second in 2022. His participation in the Winter Derby served as preparation for the Dubai Turf on World Cup night, an event he has triumphed in for the past three years.

This race marked Lord North’s return since securing a hat-trick in a Group One race. However, his lack of race fitness and the extended distance (now 11 furlongs at Southwell) seemed to catch him off guard.

In contrast, Military Order had the advantage of a recent run, finishing second in the trial for this race. His performance in the Winter Derby showcased a definite return to his best form.

Previously, Military Order had won the Lingfield Derby Trial last spring. Despite being sent off at 9-2 odds for the Derby, he finished last among the 14 runners. His subsequent outing at Chester also yielded little improvement.

Under the confident guidance of jockey Danny Tudhope, Charlie Appleby’s charge took the lead from Forest Of Dean and managed to hold off Lord North’s late surge, winning by a length. A well-executed victory for Military Order.
