Tom Marquand was instructed by trainer Hughie Morrison to take a prominent position behind the leader but instead kept Quickthorn wide of his rivals in the early stages before leading them away in the first corner. From there it was foothold as Marquand put on a strong gallop that gradually toiled after his rivals.

Runner-up Nate The Great was the only one to bridge the gap, but Quickthorn found more and more and his rivals came no closer to the line.

“I didn’t really discuss the ride with the jockey,” Morrison said. “The idea was to move forward and probably follow one, but he was up front and enjoying it.

“I didn’t enjoy it for a moment, but it was a great effort. What a horse!”

Quickthorn is not competing in the Gold Cup and Morrison is looking at a fall campaign.

He added: “The ground was fast enough for him today so autumn is really his life and on that performance he is worthy of going back to the highest level.”
