This race has long been a stage for unfinished business, and the 2026 renewal looks no different, with a deep and competitive field assembling at Punchestown Racecourse for one of the Festival’s defining contests.
King Rasko Grey takes the Turners Novices' Hurdle 🏆

At the head of the market sits King Rasko Grey, a horse who has done little wrong and whose consistency has made him a natural focal point. His blend of tactical pace and professionalism has seen him rise steadily through the ranks, and he arrives here with the profile of a horse still on an upward curve. Whether he has the latent brilliance sometimes required to win a race of this nature remains the central question, but his solidity is beyond dispute.
Sharing prominence towards the top of the betting are El Cairos and Leader d’Allier, two who bring slightly different, but equally compelling, credentials. El Cairos has shaped like a horse with gears, capable of quickening off a strong pace, and that ability can be decisive in a race that often turns tactical before the home turn. Leader d’Allier, by contrast, appeals as a relentless galloper, one who could stretch the field and test the stamina of his rivals if allowed to dictate matters.
Skylight Hustle sits just behind that leading trio in the market, and there is a sense he could yet have more to offer than his current odds imply. His form has been progressive rather than spectacular, but that steady trajectory is often a hallmark of a horse peaking for spring festivals. If the principals underperform, he is well positioned to capitalise.
Beyond the front rank, the race begins to open up. Saint Baco and Koktail Brut are priced to suggest each-way possibilities, and both have shown enough to indicate they belong at this level, even if they may need a career best to land the prize. Ballyfad, Le Labo and He’s On Fire sit in a cluster of contenders who could easily outrun their odds with the right race setup, particularly if the tempo becomes searching.
Baron Noir and Sober add further depth, while the likes of Sortudo, Blake and Ebony King would need significant improvement but are not without intrigue in a race where the late season often brings unexpected leaps forward. Deeper still, Starting Fifteen, Laurets d’Estruval and Too Bossy For Us represent connections willing to roll the dice at the highest level, while Eachtotheirown and Future Prospect are names that hint at potential rather than proven top-class form.
At the foot of the market, Full Of Life, Free Spirit and Murat would be surprise winners on all known evidence, but Punchestown has a habit of rewarding those who arrive here fresher or less exposed than their rivals.
Tactically, much will depend on how the race unfolds in its early stages. A strong pace would bring stamina into play and potentially set things up for a closer, while a steadier tempo could favour those with a sharper turn of foot. In that regard, the contrasting styles of the market principals only add to the intrigue.
What is certain is that this is rarely a race won by reputation alone. It demands resilience as well as class, and often rewards those who have been brought here with a clear plan rather than having left their race behind earlier in the spring.
King Rasko Grey may set the standard, but in a field of this depth, he is unlikely to have things his own way. El Cairos and Leader d’Allier bring different threats, Skylight Hustle lurks with intent, and a host of others wait for any sign of vulnerability. As ever at Punchestown, it promises to be a race where promise must finally give way to proof.
