Whiteout beats stablemate Limini to win the Grade 1 Mares Champion Hurdle

Willie Mullins' favourite Limini could finish only second, but the champion trainer still took the spoils when Whiteout came out best. It was a career high for the winner, carrying the colours of local owner David Lawlor, who was bred in Germany and spent her early career in France.
"She won a claimer in France and I think we put in a claim in for her for €22,000 and got her," said Mullins. "It's David's local track so he will be delighted and Whiteout likes this course, she does well here. Whiteout had it easy enough up front, we changed tactics with her and it paid off. I think trying to settle Limini meant that she got too far out of the race. She made a couple of mistakes and it meant she ended up with too much to do. You can't jump like that and win a Grade 1. Whiteout is booked into Shantou and I think she'll still be covered. We'd thought about the Chester Cup but won't go there now. But I think there's still a good Flat handicap in her."
Winning rider Paul Townend added: "It was a bit of a surprise but I got it my own way a bit in front. I was always able to set the fractions I wanted to and she quickened well off the bend. She never rose a gallop at Aintree for whatever reason but she had a good run at Cheltenham in the Martin Pipe race. She definitely bounced back to form and it was probably a career best."
