Third Time Lucky lands the Betfred Cambridgeshire for Richard Fahey & Adam Beschizza
Third Time Lucky, the mount of Adam Beschizza, had his nose right down where it mattered to get the verdict by a short head and give trainer Richard Fahey a second successive big Saturday handicap win following Don't Touch in the Ayr Gold Cup last weekend.
There was drama shortly after the start when Brendan Brackan unseated Colin Keane.
The 34 horses remaining were spread right across the course with Third Time Lucky always prominent on the far side of the track.
Gabrial's Kaka and Mistiroc headed the field on the near side, where the well-backed 9-2 favourite Portage came with every chance but could not quite get there.
Meanwhile on the far side, David Elsworth's Master The World came through strongly for Silvestre de Sousa but Third Time Lucky (14-1) found that bit extra to land the spoils.
Beschizza said: "We went a good gallop, I set a nice gallop the whole way, Silvestre came upsides me and went a good length up, but I thought he'd gone fairly soon and my fellow is a tough, game sort. I just had to switch to my right, he changed his legs and went on.
"He's only small, but he's very honest. He goes on all sorts of ground, today was probably on the quick side of good but he's a relentless galloper. That was the only issue, just seeing out the mile and one, that was the only factor.
"As a jockey you always know in the back of my mind whether you've got it, I thought I just had by a fraction."
Mick Scaife, part of the winning connections, said: "We've had a great season winning these big heritage handicaps and it's just been success after success.
"The Cambridgeshire is one of the last big handicaps of the season and is such a great race to be part of - to win it is fantastic.
"Richard Fahey planned the Cambridgeshire, but he keeps all his plans to himself and tells afterwards! We can't complain as he keeps coming up trumps.
"After his win at Thirsk we thought there might a decent race in him, and the way he has battled from being a length and a half down showed how tough he is.
"We thought we had a good chance of finishing in the first four."
