Bronze Angel
Supporters of apprentice jockey Louis Steward were rewarded for the second time in a major handicap after he guided Bronze Angel home at 14-1.

Last month, Steward had struck at 20-1 on Mutual Regard in the Ebor, but will now no longer have the asset of his 5lb claim as this was the 50th success of the 19-year-old's career.

It was just as notable an achievement for his Marcus Tregoning-trained mount, who was joining just half a dozen other dual winners of the fiendishly competitive nine-furlong heat as he was also the answer to the 2012 renewal.

Steward, whose family run an amusement arcade in Great Yarmouth, is apprenticed with Michael Bell, and earned gratitude from Tregoning for fulfilling his part of the bargain by staying calm and pushing Bronze Angel two and a quarter lengths clear of dead-heating pair Niceofyoutotellme and Velox.

"That was my 50th winner, I am now a 3lb claimer, so that's a nice way of doing it," said Steward.

"He loves a big field, and this is when he comes best on this quick ground. I tried to produce him as late as I could and it worked. The Ebor was spectacular and just to do it again at the end of the year is amazing. It's such a privilege to ride him, and a great training performance from Mr Tregoning."

Of the future, Steward added: "I had a word with the boss (Michael Bell) today, so Dubai is in the pipeline and I think there is a possibility it will be for Godolphin. I've never ridden abroad before so it will be an education."

Tregoning said: "It was a great training performance by the team who came with me to Whitsbury. It has started extremely well so far but it just needs a couple of good horses to make it really go.

"He's a consistent performer and all credit to his owner, Lady Tennant, to stick with him, because we missed last year really, when he jarred a joint and it took him a long while to get over it. It would have been lovely if he could have followed Prince De Galles, who won two in a row (1969, 1970).

"Martin Dwyer would have ridden him but we felt the claim was important and this guy is riding full of confidence.

"Louis has excelled again. He is very calm - that's the trick, it is the same with someone like William Buick or Martin Dwyer - they have ice-cool nerve and the pressure is on in these big races. We fancied him like mad, we've made no secret of that, and we conveyed that to him - but he's ridden him really well.

"I guess we will have to come back again next year but we might think about taking him to Dubai over the winter."
