Stoute won the race 12 months ago with Crystal Capella and repeated the feat as the 11/2 chance fended off the challenge of Joshua Tree to score by two and three-quarter lengths.

Stoute said: “We really thought that he was brimful of promise last year and he had an injury after the Gordon Stakes. He hasn’t really been firing this year but he did today.

“I was reluctant to use cheekpieces on him in the Hardwicke Stakes but I was getting a little bit anxious. He has come and vindicated himself today, so that’s the good thing.

“He was off from the Gordon Stakes to his comeback this year and I was prepared to forgive his him comeback as he got tired and the ground was testing. But after that he didn’t do what we hoped - he was travelling well but not seeing out his races.

“That was a good run today and the form looks smart but we will take out time with him now. It is just nice to see him back up there. He has always been highly regarded and we will have to have a think about plans.”

Moore added: “He had to step forward on his form this year but he has always worked like a very good horse. I remember in the King Edward VII Stakes last year that, if he knew his job, he would have beaten Nathaniel. I thought then he would be a very good horse but he hasn’t lived up to it.

“That was a step in the right direction and he’s a horse with plenty of talent.”

JOSHUA OFF ON HIS TRAVELS AGAIN

The much travelled Joshua Tree is set to travel to Arlington Park, near Chicago, for the newly created American St Leger, run over 1m and 5½ furlongs, after being placed second in the Group Two Princess of Wales’s Goldsmiths stakes. Marco Botti, who took over the training of the tough Montjeu horse in July of last year said: “I think he ran a good race. He probably wanted the ground to be quicker than this but he found some better ground and stayed on. He ran today as a prep race for the St Leger in America in a month’s time and he will go there next. I think the tongue tie also helped him as he is quite a heavy breathing horse.”

Ed Dunlop said of third, Red Cadeaux: “I think it was maybe one race too many. He didn’t really have anything to race with and he tends to drift left so Tom quite rightly took him to the rail (on the far side). He’s run very well but these days I think he probably needs better ground than this and he will now have a holiday.”
