1st 16 Tiger Eye 5/1 2F Newmarket trainer Michael Jarvis was absent from The NatWest Rowley Mile today with a bout of flu, but he received the perfect tonic when Tiger Eye put in a superb front-running display to claim the inaugural running of the Timeform Tattersalls Fillies 800 over seven furlongs.
Partnered by Philip Robinson, the Danehill Dancer juvenile filly led virtually from pillar to post and stayed on resolutely to score by two and three quarter lengths from Vitoria. Harry Herbert, managing director for owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, commented of the 5/1 winner: “I was a bit worried when she came in from 10/1! “She is owned by a private syndicate I put together for Victor Chandler and his friends a couple of years ago. I am thrilled for Victor, although he is at Longchamp today as he takes a group there every year. “Tom and Thelma Wade are involved with the syndicate and also John McDougall. All three have been great supporters of Highclere from the start and I am so happy for them. “It was a terrific thrill today. Michael had told us she had been working very well. “We fell in love with this filly from the moment we saw her. Being by Danehill Dancer who had such a good season last year, we expected her to go for a fortune but we managed to get relatively cheaply (82,000 Guineas). When you look at the big picture, she wasn’t expensive. “I suspect that will probably it for the season now. She doesn’t have to do much more really. “We hope that she can develop into a Guineas contender next year. She looks to have the size and scope to do so.” Stan James, who sponsor the first fillies Classic of the season, make Tiger Eye a 33/1 chance for glory on The NatWest Rowley Mile next May, while her owners VC Bet firm also go 33/1. Other bookmakers offer 25/1 (Ladbrokes) and 33/1 (Paddy Power).
CONFIDENT ROBINSON Philip Robinson, the winning jockey on Tiger Eye in Tattersalls Timeform Fillies 800, commented: “Come halfway, I was pretty confident. “I was travelling well and saving a lot for the finish and when I asked her she was there. “Keep figures crossed, there will be a few more paydays like this. “Michael (Jarvis - the trainer) will hopefully be back on his feet in a few days dancing around and celebrating this win. “I like my mount Yaddree in the Cambridgeshire later this afternoon - he has got a big heart.” PLACED FILLIES HAVE HAD THEIR FINAL OUTINGS OF THE SEASON The Mark Wallace-trained Vitoria was two-and-three-quarter lengths behind runaway winner Tiger Eye but the Irishman was thrilled with the performance of his charge. He said: “I’m absolutely delighted with that. She’s going to be a very nice filly next year. The winner’s probably a smart horse and my filly hasn’t done a lot wrong and she’s won a few quid. The owners are happy and if they’re happy, I’m happy.” Mark Wallace leaves Newmarket in November for a new life training at Warwick Farm, NSW, Australia so he will be handing over the first-crop daughter of Exceed And Excel, who was a 120,000gns yearling purchase, to another trainer. “It’s a shame,” sais Wallace. “But there are plenty of Exceed And Excels down there though. This will be it for her now this season.” Mrs Julie Wood is the proud owner of The Miniver Rose, a 100,000gns yearling and yet another juvenile from the Richard Hannon yard to acquit herself well in a major sales race this year when finishing third. Mrs Wood said: “I’m absolutely over the moon. We were dropping back to seven furlongs - we ran at a mile last time - but all things considered she’s run awfully well to be placed. She was right out the back and ran on very well when she hit the rising ground. This is it now for the season. We’ll put her away for next year.”
