Back-to-Back Cambridgeshire Victories for In-Form Gosden 1st 14 Tazeez 25/1 The great run of John Gosden’s stable continued with a length win for Tazeez in the totesport.com Cambridgeshire, giving the Newmarket trainer his third win in the valuable handicap and his second in succession, having triumphed last year with Pipedreamer. Gosden said: “Tazeez ran an exceptionally good race at Sandown and the form of that race was solid. Then he had a good win here on the July course but just wasn’t happy last time out - he got bumped around a bit. I was worried about the ground today but he’s got a good action and he handled it well.” Gosden was effusive in his praise of winning rider Richard Hills. He said: “Richard did a lovely job of just giving him confidence. He’s an interesting horse in that, as a four-year-old, he just lacks a bit of confidence but I thought it was a beautiful ride. It’s a funny thing with horses: they have to have self-confidence just like any athlete.” “I thought it was a really lovely, sympathetic ride and I was thrilled with that. What I’m saying is, he’s not the easiest horse to ride and I thought Richard rode him beautifully. There’s a lot of credit to the jockey here. “I took Virtual out for the ground and that was the right decision as he jarred up badly in the Britannia (at Royal Ascot). This horse we left in and I’m very pleased we did. “I thought it was quick enough for Tazeez but, by God, I take that back now. I put all the Racing UK punters off as I was worried about the ground. Next time, don’t ask me before the race!” In comparison to last year’s winner, Gosden said: “Tazeez is a very nice horse but he’s no Pipedreamer.” Gosden also trained subsequent four-time Group 1 winner Halling to win the Cambridgeshire in 1994.
FIRST CAMBRIDGESHIRE WIN FOR HILLS Richard Hills won his first totesport.com Cambridgeshire on Tazeez, switching to that horse after his intended mount Mutajarred was withdrawn because of the fast ground. Martin Dwyer was replaced on Tazeez. Hills said: “I would feel sorry for Martin but he picked up a big race earlier (the Timeform Tattersalls) so we have both had a good day. “That is racing - you have to be in the right place at the right time and you need a lot of luck. “Tazeez has worked extremely well at home with Group horses so we have never really doubted his ability. He is a horse who likes a bit of room and the draw did help me today in that I was able to let him run and enjoy himself. “When he won on the July Course, he made all and raced on his own. “He stayed on very well when we hit the rising ground. He felt his way down the dip but I was confident after that. The Cambridgeshire is a great prize to win. “He has really started to put it together now. I was going to desert him - Mutajarred loves soft ground and the forecast was for plenty of rain. It is lucky that we did not run him. “The wind had a big impact on the race. It is a cross wind and took the whole field over towards the stands’ rail. If there is no wind, they run up the middle. “There were lots of gusts, making the conditions quite difficult. He is a big strong horse and I hope he can win a Group race.”
SO NEAR FOR NANTON, SWOP WAS TOO FAR BACK, WHITE HAS OPTIONS Scottish trainer Jim Goldie saw 66/1 shot Nanton go down by a length in the totesport.com Cambridgeshire, but was very satisfied with the effort of the six-year-old Spinning World gelding. Partnered by 5lb claimer Kelly Harrison, Nanton looked to have the race in the bag as he went clear in the final furlong but was worn down in the closing stages by Tazeez. Goldie said: “That was a bugger! I thought we had it! “That was a fantastic run. He travelled liked the winner all the way. We thought he would run well. He needs this faster ground and holds the track record at Redcar. The ground in the north has just been too soft for him this year. Maybe he is an improving six-year-old! “Today was the plan for him. He may have been fortunately drawn today but you take what you get given.” A further length and a quarter back in third was the 7/1 favourite Swop. His trainer Luca Cumani said: “He ran well but got too far behind. He made up a lot of ground. “They were always going a stride too fast for my other runner (Ask The Butler, 8th). He is more of a 10-furlong horse and stayed on well.” Fourth-placed Little White Lie continued his good run of form this season, having taken the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup at Newmarket’s Ritz Club July Festival. His trainer John Jenkins commented: “He ran really well. “A drop of rain would have just helped him. “He is a very good horse. I don’t know where he will go now, we just need to think. He has several options, one of which could be to go over hurdles.”
