Panic Attack delivered just the tonic Dan Skelton needed, sweeping to victory with the kind of calm authority her name does little to suggest.

After the heartache of The New Lion’s fall in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle, the Skelton team headed south in search of redemption, and found it in emphatic fashion as Tristan Durrell guided the mare through one of the season’s most demanding handicaps.

Turned out again barely a fortnight after her Paddy Power Gold Cup triumph at Cheltenham, and stretching to three miles and two furlongs for the first time, she was sent off at 16-1 in a vast field of 24. Yet from early on she travelled with a rhythm that suggested the quick turnaround had done nothing to blunt her edge. Durrell kept her in a smooth, stalking rhythm, her jumping crisp, her attitude unwavering, and when they swung for home she was the one still full of running. She settled matters decisively, pulling six and a half lengths clear of Three Card Brag, with The Changing Man staying on for third.

“He’s given her a brilliant ride, fair play to Tristan, we trusted him,” said a delighted Skelton, his praise as warm as his relief was obvious. “He has improved so much as a rider, like no other rider I’ve managed. It’s down to confidence and Harry (Skelton) giving him the right pointers and us filling him with confidence.

“She took off at the last, she was brilliant. She probably jumped the last so big to give herself a big fill (of air) but she’s a credit to herself to do that just 14 days later, a mare as well.”

Not since Celestial Gold, trained by Martin Pipe in 2004, had the Paddy Power–Coral Gold Cup double been completed. Skelton admitted the thought had crossed his mind.

“Celestial Gold did it but I was lying in bed the other day thinking he’s the only one to do it. Now there’s two!

“I said to Bryan (Drew, owner) ‘look she’s nine now, she’s getting on a bit and when they are fit and well you have to run them’.

“She’s clearly in form and Harry said early in the week to get on with it.”

And get on with it she did—Panic Attack, serene amidst the storm, turning a high-class handicap into a display of controlled authority, and lifting the mood of her connections in the process.
