Tasleet wins the Greenham Stakes, holding off Knife Edge in thrilling finish
The Haggas-trained colt was sent off the 4/7 favourite in the hands of Paul Hanagan after winning a competitive sales race last year before being touched off at Group Three level on his final start of 2015.
Tasleet threw away any chance of victory that day by drifting across the track, but he kept a straight line this time as Knife Edge served it up to him in the final furlong.
Tasleet and Knife Edge were neck and neck in the dying strides, but the first-named just prevailed in a photo finish.
"He's a terribly genuine horse and I don't think Marco's horse is a bad horse either - I bet he turns out to be all right," Haggas told At The Races.
"This isn't his bag at all, either in terms of seven furlongs or the surface."
The winner could now head for the 2000 Guineas, but the trainer seemed fairly lukewarm on the idea.
"We'll see what Sheikh Hamdan has for the race and what he wants to do, but I think we might be more likely to end up training him for Royal Ascot - whether that will be the Jersey Stakes or the Commonwealth Cup I wouldn't be sure, but Paul seemed to think a fast-run six furlongs would be just as suitable as seven so we'll see where we are nearer the time."
