Humphrey Bogart provided another boost to the form of Investec Oaks hopeful So Mi Dar as he won the Betfred Derby Trial Stakes.

Richard Hannon's charge won at Doncaster last August and while he twice finished fourth at Group Two level, the Tagula colt had not yet get his head in front again.

He finished second to filly So Mi Dar in the Derby Trial at Epsom last time but went one place better as he saw off 7/4 favourite Carntop by half a length.

Sean Levey produced his mount down the outside and while he got a bit close with Across The Stars in the final furlong, Humphrey Bogart kicked on again to take the victory.

The winner was the only one of the five runners without an Investec Derby entry.

However, Hannon admits the owner, Chelsea Thoroughbreds, may be tempted into stumping up the £75,000 needed to add Humphrey Bogart to the Epsom field at the supplementary stage on May 30.

Hannon said: "I didn't think he would get a mile and a quarter but he did that last time. He settled well today and Sean gave him a lovely ride.

"Whether he goes for the Derby or not, I don't know. I don't normally get these problems at this time of year. I'm sure they (owners) would love to have a go.

"You get drawn into saying the Derby is not a strong race, but it's the Derby at the end of the day. We will sleep on it and enjoy today.

"I think he won a shade cosily and this is the most similar track to Epsom with the ups and downs, but he's been round Epsom and he definitely handles that track."

Humphrey Bogart finished a neck behind So Mi Dar at Epsom and John Gosden's filly is now 6/1 from 7s for the Oaks with MansionBet following the boost to her form.

Ladbrokes also inserted the winner into their Derby market at 25/1 while MansionBet make him 10s for the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.
