French Ship has been one of the more progressive handicap hurdlers of the season so far and, having impressed at both Cheltenham and Newbury, he looks set to head next to Kempton on January 10.

The five-year-old’s campaign did not begin smoothly, coming down on his seasonal return in the Silver Trophy at Kempton, but he quickly put that behind him with a decisive success at Cheltenham in October. That performance saw the handicapper raise him 8lb, yet he proved more than equal to the task when stepping out again at Newbury, where another polished display resulted in a further 10lb rise.

Despite that steady climb in the ratings, connections remain upbeat as plans begin to take shape for the winter.

“French Ship is in great form and he’s probably going to run in the Lanzarote, that’s the plan,” said Johnson White, who trains the gelding alongside Philip Hobbs.

“He will get further, we think, but he doesn’t need to get further just yet, so at the moment that is the plan.

“He’s been winning over the trip of the Lanzarote and that is the next chance he’ll get over it off his current mark.

“We’ll take it one step at a time, but he hasn’t put a foot wrong yet this season, he’s in great form and we couldn’t be happier with him.”
