In a surprising turn of events, Jay Jay Reilly, ridden by Tristan Durrell, secured a 33-1 victory, providing trainer Dan Skelton with back-to-back successes in the race. The previous year, Bridget Andrews had guided West Balboa to victory by a short head.
Tristan Durrell took the eight-year-old Jay Jay Reilly to the front at the penultimate obstacle, and the duo maintained their momentum all the way to the finish line. Despite Nemean Lion posing a significant threat approaching the final flight, a less-than-ideal jump left the 9-2 shot struggling in the run-in, ultimately finishing a length and a quarter behind the winner. The minor placings were claimed by Impose Toi, the 11-4 favorite, and 28-1 outsider Good Luck Charm.
Tristan Durrell, who still enjoys a 3lb allowance, had earlier secured a win on Flegmatik for the same trainer. Expressing his excitement, Durrell called it the best day of his career and highlighted the significance of achieving a double on such a prominent day. He credited the guidance he received from Bridget Andrews, who had won the Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle the previous year, emphasizing the importance of an okay start and staying out of trouble in the competitive field.
Jay Jay Reilly, despite being a 33-1 outsider, had been considered a strong contender by the team, as he had never felt better and gained confidence back over hurdles. Durrell expressed his gratitude to Dan Skelton and the owners for putting their trust in him and described the victory as a great day for the team.
