Royal Artillery puts in a battling display to win

The one-time Classic hope made up for lost time when getting the better of Scottish in this Group Two contest over a mile and a quarter.

Scottish, who had made all to win at Newbury last month, set off in front but was closely followed by Royal Artillery while Gabrial and Foundation were slowly away.

The race only really concerned the front two and they fought out the finish, coming close together at one point before the John Gosden-trained Royal Artillery (10/1) got the verdict by a length and a quarter.

Arab Spring made up ground close home to finish just a nose behind Scottish in third place while Royal Artillery's stablemate Foundation was only fifth of the six runners.

Winning rider Colm O'Donoghue said: "He's a lovely progressive horse. Mr Gosden has always liked him. He's a big, scopey horse and will get better with time.

"He's come back well from his last race at Ascot and will step up to another level now.

"We've gone a good gallop for a mile and a quarter. He was getting a bit tired towards the end. He'll get stronger."

"We're obviously delighted with him. He's always shown a lot of ability at home. He's got a tongue tie for a reason - he's had a slight wind problem," added Gosden's travelling head lad Tony Proctor.

"He'll be a better horse next year. He was slow to start this year and there's more to come. He's a big horse and the weather we've had this year hasn't been kind to him."

The quick ground was blamed for Foundation's disappointing display.

"Rab (Havlin, jockey) said the ground was too quick for Foundation. That was the first thing he said as he got off the horse," said Proctor.
