Cable Bay wins from a fast finishing Ascription & Absolutely So
Jamie Spencer buried his mount in the middle of the pack for much of the seven-furlong journey, before moving up to challenge Absolutely So and the front-running That Is The Spirit for the lead approaching the furlong marker.
Ascription came from further back to pose the biggest threat to the Charlie Hills-trained winner, but Cable Bay held on by half a length, with Absolutely So the same distance away in third.
The four-year-old endured a difficult season in 2014 having mixed it in top company as a juvenile, but he arrived on Merseyside having run right up to his best when a close third in the Lockinge at Newbury.
Hills said: "He's got some very decent form all the way through his career, he's been placed in a lot of Group races and to be fair to the horse he got cast in his box during the winter from being a two- to three-year-old and it just set us back really.
"Last year he had a tough season, but he finished running a really good race in the Challenge Stakes and we've had a really clean passage with him this year and he's showing what he can do again.
"He's a beautiful looking horse as well and I think we'll look at Royal Ascot for him now. The form's there.
"It (the Queen Anne) looks a pretty tough race, but we're going there off a winning run and we'll give it a go I think."
