Paco is the Boy in the Betfair Cup
29/07/08

1st 7 Paco Boy 7/1 3F
2nd 8 Stimulation 14/1
3rd 3 Dunelight 12/1

Trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Richard Hughes teamed up to take the feature Group Two Betfair Cup when Paco Boy beat Stimulation by a neck in the seven-furlong contest.

“He’s been working very well for the last two or three weeks with the horse who runs in the Sussex Stakes tomorrow (Major Cadeaux) so obviously we’re very happy that he’s won so well,” said Hannon.

“I thought he (Richard Hughes) was a little bit close on him really. The plan was to drop in a bit better but he had a lovely clear run all of the way. He’s a good little horse who can tuck in and do anything really.

“He got into all sorts of trouble in France last time, there was nothing wrong with his run except traffic problems. I said rather than going to Ascot we should save him for here.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow, Hannon added: “We’re probably running for a place but a bit of rain will help him. He’ll give that horse (Henrythenavigator) a race tomorrow because he’s a good horse.”

Hughes added: “He would die for you, this horse. Going down I wasn’t happy with the ground. I thought beforehand that we’d win but at the start I said to Johnny Murtagh that I didn’t think we would because of the ground.

“He didn’t know which leg to pull up on and was really a bit feely. So he’s some brave horse to go through and do that today. I think he got away with the ground today but I don’t think we would again.

“The plan was to be further back but he jumped out quickly and had a good rhythm on him. He has a great turn of foot and would be better over a mile, he was just very unlucky when he ran over that trip in France. I nearly got killed five times there and I’m glad I say my prayers at night! He just didn’t act that day and he got interfered with six or seven times at least.

“Today he relaxed lovely, went the long way around and picked up real good.”

MORRISON, COX & SUROOR CONTENTED

There were no real complaints from trainers Hughie Morrison, Clive Cox and Saeed bin Suroor after the running of the Group Two £155,000 Betfair Cup over seven furlongs.

Stimulation finished the neck runner-up and Hughie Morrison said: “That was a pretty solid effort and we expected him to run a good race.

“I suppose you might say that Paco Boy was not necessarily the one you would have thought would beat us, but he did win the Greenham pretty well and was unlucky in the French Guineas. I think both us and the winner have improved today.

“He was beaten fair and square. The winner just came back at us.

“I have put him in the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury, which absurdly closed for entries today so I had to put him in before he ran today.

“I think he could be a serious horse next year and could get quicker. I am not saying he would be top-class over six furlongs, but he could win a Group Three.”

Dunelight ran a similar race to the one he ran last year in this race (when he also finished third), making the running until behind overhauled in the final furlong.

Trainer Clive Cox said: “I am very pleased.

“It was tough for him to give away weight to two very impressive improvers today.

“This horse is very genuine and has run right up to his best.

“We have a few options where we go next with him - the ground will be the determining factor.”

Godolphin’s Il Warrd finished fourth and his trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: “He ran well.

“I don’t think he was happy racing on the rail today.

“Providing he comes out of this race sound, he could maybe go for the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury in a couple of weeks.”
