Rod Fabricius Reflects on Glorious Goodwood 2008 Rod Fabricius, Goodwood’s Managing Director, expressed his satisfaction at the conclusion of a successful Glorious Goodwood 2008. He said: “Attendance has held up very well during Festival Week and we were particularly pleased to see the increase in the crowd on Tuesday, as this defied the general trend at major racing festivals of racegoers migrating to later in the week. “Our additional marketing for Tuesday clearly worked and the increases in attendance on Friday and Saturday can be attributed to our strengthening partnership with Channel 4 and their promotion of the race meeting. “The race programme held up very well indeed and the combination of Aidan O’Brien and Johnny Murtagh were in tremendous form with Yeats, Henrythenavigator and Halfway To Heaven. “Yeats’ imperious performance in the Royal Bank Of Scotland Goodwood Cup was a joy to watch and he joins the likes of Double Trigger, Further Flight and Persian Punch as a multiple winner of this historic contest. “It was very exciting to see Henrythenavigator take Wednesday’s BGC Sussex Stakes and he must surely be in pole position to be crowned European champion miler for 2008 while Halfway To Heaven added success over 10 furlongs in the Blue Square Nassau Stakes to her previous Irish 1,000 Guineas victory. “We also like to unearth a nice two-year-old at Goodwood and the Betfair Molecomb Stakes once again looks to have thrown up an exciting prospect in Finjaan. We look forward to him following in the footsteps of last year’s winner Fleeting Spirit. “Operationally, we only experienced minor crowd trouble limited to a small minority and the only real issues we had to contend with was the incidence of forged badges and forged £20 notes, but that almost goes with the territory at a major racing festival. “I would like to pay tribute to the Groundstaff who have done a wonderful job to keep the racing surface in such good condition in what were not always the easiest of circumstances. On Monday night there was a severe weather warning, but fortunately we missed the worst of the rain. “The cover of grass has been excellent and the use of temporary rails has worked extremely well in providing fresh ground throughout the week. “It was great to see trainers who specifically target Goodwood such as Mark Johnston, Marcus Tregoning, Aidan O’Brien and one of our directors, John Dunlop, rewarded with success.”
