Glorious End Completes Wonderful Week The curtain came down this evening on an exceptional week’s racing at Glorious Goodwood, where crowds flocked to witness high-class and competitive racing. Attendance and tote figures showed increases on each of the meeting’s
five days last year, and some brilliant performances from horses and
jockeys will live long in the memory. Managing director Rod Fabricius praised Goodwood’s staff in his
summary of the event, and said the course would continue striving to
improve the Glorious Goodwood experience for competitors and spectators. Fabricius said: “It’s been a great week’s racing with
more runners than I can remember - the weather’s been fabulous
and all the hard work of the staff has been rewarded with good increases
in crowd, tote and catering sales. “We’ve welcomed new sponsors, while the race programme has
been very strong throughout, and, given the wet summer, the course has
stood up very well. Seamus Buckley and the ground staff deserve to be
congratulated on presenting the course to a very high standard throughout
the week. “Blue Square’s three-year sponsorship of the final day has
got off to a tremendous start, and the quality of the Blue Square Nassau
Stakes was very high. We’re looking forward to building on what
we’ve achieved with them in the first year of the partnership. “Inevitably we can make some improvements in such areas as speed
of arrival into car parks, provision of courtesy transport, provision
of lavatories, sufficiency of furniture and seating, and speedy services
of good value food and drink. They are the essentials to an enjoyable
day out. “We will strive to ensure racegoers continue enjoying racing on
top of the Downs, and are very keen to avoid any risk of over-crowding.
We want to ensure those who support Goodwood can take home great memories
of their day with us. “We would love to increase prize-money, and will strive to do
so, but it is under constant pressure from the challenge we face in attracting
new sponsorship.” TOTE TURNOVER RISES AGAIN totepool on-course cash turnover DAY 2007 2006
GLORIOUS GOODWOOD 2007 - WINNERS Tuesday, July 31, 2007 Wednesday, August 1, 2007 Thursday, August 2, 2007 Friday, August 3, 2007 Saturday, August 4, 2007 GLORIOUS SUMMER FUN When 2007 is remembered for rain, floods and weeks of leaden skies,
fans of racing will cherish memories of Glorious Goodwood as the point
when summer finally woke up. Five days of near-ceaseless sunshine over Sussex suggests someone at
Goodwood has a hot-line to the weather gods. From the moment Championship Point took the meeting’s opening
race, the Bank Of Scotland Investment Service Handicap, strawberries-and-cream
conditions have prevailed, and the tennis theme endured on Friday when
Third Set captured the totesport Mile. Both horses are owned by Wimbledon
fan John Livock. No man has put more money into racing around the globe than Sheikh Mohammed,
and few would begrudge him a sparkling day on the Downs with a big winner
thrown in - two was even better. Ramonti’s victory in the Gr.1
BGC Sussex Stakes on Wednesday justified the Sheikh’s journey to
Goodwood and provided Frankie Dettori with a double initiated on Rio
De La Playa in the Gr.2 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes. This was a champagne
moment not just for Godolphin, but also for those who suspect the chesnut
colt might prove rather sspecial. It will be fascinating to see how far
Rio De La Playa progresses. Glorious Goodwood racegoers, and those watching on Channel 4 and Racing
UK, were treated to a masterclass in proven excellence on Thursday, when
champion jockey Ryan Moore rode four winners. None can be described as ‘steering
jobs’, and for a couple of hours Moore seemed to have the blueprint
on riding racehorses - cunningly executed hold-up rides brought him success
in the Gr.2 ABN AMRO Goodwood Cup on Allegretto and De Boer Stakes on
Docofthebay, while a close-to-the-pace show on Moorhouse Lad in the Gr.3
Audi Stakes had the same result. Even the week’s sole shower of rain, which cloaked the Lillie
Langtry Stakes, could not hide Moore’s brilliance on Hi Calypso. Thursday was also a good day for David and Patricia Thompson of Newmarket’s
Cheveley Park Stud, owner-breeders of Allegretto and Alphameric Vase
winner Pipedreamer. Many of this week’s Glorious Goodwood winners will succeed again in the coming months - they could include Purple Moon, victorious in the Coutts Glorious Stakes on Friday and now favourite for York’s totesport Ebor Handicap, and there might be very bright futures for a pair of two-year-olds trained by Jeremy Noseda. Fleeting Spirit took the Gr.3 Betfair Molecomb Stakes on Tuesday, while Strike the Deal won the Gr.2 Richmond Stakes on Friday - precursors to success at the highest level, maybe? And so to a sumptuous Saturday feast hosted by the day’s new sponsors, Blue Square, a progressive force in bookmaking. The Blue Square Nassau Stakes and Bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup are worth the admission price without five other intriguing contests. Have a good day. |
