Jessica Harrington’s Hotazhell, ridden by Shane Foley, was an 11-1 shot in the Group One field of eight. Always looking a threat, he locked horns with the favorite Delacroix in the final furlong, edging out the win by a nose as the two pulled clear of the rest. Hotzahell was just ahead of Delacroix by a nose, with a gap of four and three-quarter lengths back to Wimbledon Hawkeye in third. Coral has both colts at 25-1 for next year’s Derby, while Hotazhell is now 25-1 from 33-1 for the 2000 Guineas with Betfair.
The testing ground proved challenging, with John and Thady Gosden’s Nebras and Detain falling back early. Seaplane, trained by Paul and Oliver Cole, traveled well but couldn’t compete with the Irish pair in the final furlong.
Harrington remarked, “He’s very tough and loves a battle; I don’t think he’ll ever win by a large margin – he loves looking at the other horse and saying, ‘I’m better than you’. He’s a bit feisty, hence his name Hotazhell. I think he might manage 10 furlongs next year, but we’ll start off over a mile. Whether he can get a mile and a half is uncertain, but he is very relaxed. He’s won a Group Three, a Group Two, and now a Group One. This is just the start of his career, and we hope he can improve next year. He’s entered in the Irish and English Guineas, so we’ll see how spring unfolds.”
Harrington, whose last top-level win was in 2022, added, “Winning a race like this is very special. We’re mainly focused on Flat racing now, with just a few jumpers left. I did a lot of shouting in the final furlong – I might get sent back to National Hunt for that! I thought he’d won, then thought he hadn’t. He had to battle twice; he’s very, very tough. It’s very exciting for next year.”
O’Brien commented on Delacroix’s performance, saying, “He’s run a stormer. We hope this bodes well for next year.”
James Owen shared his thoughts on Wimbledon Hawkeye, “He struggled in the ground but showed his heart, finishing third. James Doyle said the ground was much softer here than at Newmarket. He’s a lovely horse for next year, and I’m thrilled he mixed it up at the top and did us proud.”
