Zuider Zee Gives Gosden November Glory
    05/11/11

    2 Willing Foe 11/1

John Gosden improved his already impressive Betfred November Handicap record when Zuider Zee (8-1) ran out an emphatic winner at Doncaster.

A consistent performer all through the season, the four-year-old was Gosden's fifth win in the prestigious race. He last scored two years ago with Charm School, who won in the same green and black silks of Princess Haya of Jordan.

Having tracked Godolphin's Willing Foe into the straight, Robert Havlin pressed the button a furlong out and the response was immediate and he ran out a six-length winner. Merchant Of Dubai was third with Hanoverian Baron fourth.

Havlin said: "He travelled ever so well and when I saw it was the Godolphin horse near me, I knew I was following the right one. I had to take a pull turning in he was going so well.

"When I gave him a squeeze he really picked up and he's won easy. He'd been working really well at home and I knew he was in good form. All season he's been running well off a similar mark but he's a better horse in this ground."

On the day Khalid Abdullah was crowned champion owner for 2011, it was fitting that the first two home, Mirror Lake and Principal Role, both carried his colours in the Betfred Goals Galore EBF 'Sir Percy' Gillies Fillies' Stakes.

However, they probably did not finish in the order that was expected as Sir Henry Cecil's Principal Role was sent off the 11-4 favourite, with Mirror Lake at 7-1.

Martin Dwyer looked beaten up against the rail on Amanda Perrett's four-year-old when Beckett's Ceilidh House swooped down the middle of the track. However, Mirror Lake rallied and held off Principal Role by a neck with Ceilidh House three-quarters of a length away.

Perrett said: "She deserves that as she's run well against the likes of Midday. It's nice to win a good race for the owner as he's been very loyal to me. She had a lot in her favour today, a good draw, a galloping track and soft ground. I hope she stays in training."
