Lake Victoria surprised many by outperforming her more favored stablemate, Bedtime Story.
The favourite had previously made a significant impact by winning the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot by nine and a half lengths. Despite her subsequent two wins being less dominant, she was the 4-5 favorite to maintain her unbeaten streak.
Ryan Moore aimed to lead from the start with Bedtime Story, a daughter of Frankel and dual Nunthorpe winner Mecca’s Angel. However, as they entered the final furlong, Bedtime Story struggled, and her four competitors closed in.
Lake Victoria, another Frankel filly out of Group One winner Quiet Reflection, had shown promise by winning on her course and distance debut and then securing the Group Three Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket. She finished strongly on the outside, winning by a length and a quarter under Wayne Lordan.
Ollie Sangster’s British contender Simmering took second place, followed by O’Brien’s third-string Exactly in third, and Red Letter in fourth. Bedtime Story finished last.
O’Brien praised Lake Victoria, noting her impressive debut win and subsequent victory at Newmarket under Seanie Levey. He acknowledged that they had expected Bedtime Story to perform better but were pleased with Lake Victoria’s progress. O’Brien also expressed confidence in Wayne Lordan’s abilities, highlighting his hard work and resilience.
Looking ahead, O’Brien mentioned the possibility of Lake Victoria competing in the Cheveley Park Stakes, emphasizing her speed and potential as a sprinter. He commended Wayne Lordan for his excellent ride and dedication to training Lake Victoria.
