Shale got the better of old rival Pretty Gorgeous to win the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh.
The two fillies, trained by brothers Donnacha and Joseph O'Brien respectively, had met a couple of times earlier in the year with the score one all going into Sunday's Group One clash.
The ground was soft when Pretty Gorgeous levelled matters in their private battle in the Group Two Debutante Stakes last month but quicker ground appeared to suit the daughter of Galileo better on this occasion.
She looked vulnerable when 11/10 favourite Pretty Gorgeous loomed up on her outside but battled bravely to score under Ryan Moore at odds of 9/2.
Third went to 22/1 shot Oodnadatta.
The winning trainer said: "She's been progressing the while way, we didn't think at the start of the season she'd be the type of filly to be winning a Moyglare.
"She was nearly first off the bridle, I thought she was in trouble at halfway, but she found a lot for pressure and she toughed it out. So it was a very good performance. They're two very good fillies."
