East India Dock made light work of this non-contest, cruising to an effortless victory. Trained by James Owen, the three-year-old was previously campaigned on the Flat for the Gredley family and won his hurdles debut at Wincanton.
Stepping up to Grade Two level as the 4-5 favourite, he dominated the field of 10, with Sam Twiston-Davies guiding him home 18 lengths ahead of Olly Murphy’s Static. Coral has now made East India Dock their 8-1 favourite for the JCB Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham in March, down from 25-1.
Owen, who won this race last year with Burdett Road, said, “He’s a lovely horse and took to hurdles well at Wincanton. The staying track suits him, and he’s got a lot of class. I’ve no specific plans yet, but all roads lead to the Triumph, and he might just have one more run before then. It's fantastic the Gredley family keeps these valuable horses in training. They want winners at Cheltenham, and with Burdett Road's success last year, we're hopeful for more with this one.”
Owen added, “He relaxes more than Burdett Road did at this stage last year, and I think the New course will suit him better. He hasn’t made a mistake in his two hurdle runs, so he’ll probably have one more race before the Triumph Hurdle. We’ve got another promising horse, Lavender Hill Mob, who will be running in early December. He likes soft ground, while East India Dock prefers better ground. This horse is more straightforward than Burdett, and we know he’ll stay and can be ridden as needed. We’ll see tomorrow in the Greatwood Hurdle how much better Burdett is.”
With East India Dock's impressive performance, excitement builds as he heads towards the Cheltenham Festival.
