A wonderful display from the front running Boondooma who sees off all rivals to land the opener
Dr Richard Newland says the BetVictor Gold Cup remains the "logical target" for today's winner, despite the longer trip.
Despite having a 308-day absence to overcome, the 7-1 shot showed he was ready to fire at the first attempt with a pillar-to-post success in the two-mile contest.
After mastering Grand Annual winner Next Sensation on the run to four out, the Dr Richard Newland-trained seven-year-old then saw off his next challenger De Faoithesdream rounding the home turn to maintain his position at the head of the field.
Although putting in a slightly tired jump at the penultimate fence, the gelded son of Westerner winged the last before seeing off the staying-on Workbench by three lengths.
Following the race, the winner was clipped to 14-1 for next month's Paddy Power Gold Cup at the track by the race sponsors.
Newland said: "He is lightly raced over fences and he won very well at Haydock on his last start and I thought he would be hit hard for that.
"He then got an injury and the owners had to be patient, but I think we have got a proper horse.
"He has got a fair old engine. He was hard to settle and for him to come back on the steel like he did was good.
"The Paddy Power was the target after this. The only thing I would question is that he has got to settle better as it is over two and a half but it would be the logical target."
