There was a shock result as the experienced Ballyglasheen won gamely at 33/1 by a neck from 7/4 chance Kentucky Hyden, with the 13/8 favourite Vincenzo Mio in fourth of the six runners.
An Aidan O'Brien cast-off, Ballyglasheen had already been busy around the smaller tracks this season with two wins at Ludlow but he was hanging in there against Nicky Henderson's Kentucky Hyden as push came to shove.
Paul Moloney galvanised the chestnut for a neck defeat of the 7-4 chance and Williams said: "The fact he was 33-1 tells you we didn't fancy him, but often what these horses have done on the Flat doesn't make any difference to what they can do over hurdles."
He added: "We've won this with a couple of similar types, and you know that coming back here in March will be a totally different thing. He is, though, for sale to anyone who wants to go for the Triumph."
