Nigel Twiston-Davies sent out his first winner of the £100,000 Stewart Family Thank You Gold Cup when the second to bottom-weight, 7/1 chance Double Ross ridden by his son Sam Twiston-Davies, led two out and went clear before 14/1 hope Cantlow closed the gap to two lengths at the line.

The winning rider said: “I needed to fill him up down the hill after a mistake to try to get a bit of life back into him and when I turned in he finished really well.
"The last 100 yards were a bit scary, but he is very genuine and a great credit to all the lads in the yard. Nige was confident – I was hoping for a bit of place money but it’s nice to be proven right by the trainer again.
" Double Ross is a very good jumper, the mistake was totally my fault at the top of the hill and he was very good to stay on his feet. Heavy ground is his speciality so for him to run like this on good ground opens up a lot more options for him.”
Nigel Twiston-Davies added: “He’s a novice, but that’s how you win these big races – he was quite leniently handicapped possibly. He’s always jumped well and done everything right. I nearly didn’t run him today because he likes soft ground – the softer the better.
"The front two went off very quick – they made it a real test of stamina and that suited him down to the ground. He’s only a handicapper, but will definitely keep paying his way. He is often keen but Sam was able to settle him today.”
