Road to glory for Fonthill
Fonthill Road proved perceived wisdom wrong by landing the totesport
Ayr Gold Cup on the supposedly unfavoured far side of the track.
The six-year-old, trained by Richard Fahey and ridden by Paul Hanagan,
was short-headed 12 months ago, but went one better in dramatic style
this time.
Only three horses stayed on the far side from their low draws and it
was Fonthill Road (16-1) who took the spoils by a length.
Borderlescott (11-2) was second, with Advanced (40-1) a head away third
and Coleorton Dancer (25-1) fourth.
Royston Ffrench had Borderlescott smartly away from his 16 draw and
quickly switched over to the stands rail.
He soon had a clear lead and was able to dictate affairs, followed by
The Kiddykid and Advanced.
But the three on the far side - Kostar, Mecca's Mate and Fonthill Road
- were not out of it and it was Fonthill Road who stunned all his rivals
on the other part of the course to take this valuable six-furlong handicap.
Fahey told Channel 4 Racing: "I left it to Paul whether to go to
the far side and when I saw there were only three over there I thought
'oh no, this is not what we want', but there was pace over there which
was great.
"I wasn't going to run him, but the back man we use had a look
at him and said we should definitely run him as he had been wrong and
he'll be a different horse."
Scene Set For Totesport Ayr Gold Cup Festival 10/09/06
CROWDS at this year’s totesport Ayr Gold Cup Festival should be the
highest for a number of years with advance tickets sales well up on last year.
The three day meeting gets under way on Thursday with the SAGA 105.2 fm Raceday,
Friday sees the Grand Ladies Day Final when one lucky girl will drive off in
a new Volkswagen Golf Sport 1.6 FSI three door from the Ingram Motoring Group
of Ayr worth a whopping £16,000 and the centrepiece of Saturday is of
course the totesport Ayr Gold Cup.
A field of 28 runners will charge down the six furlong straight at Ayr and
the draw for the big race will be held in public for the first time with Olympic
sprint gold medallist Allan Wells and Ayr based racehorse trainer Linda Perratt
doing the honours at 11.00 am on Thursday.
There is another declaration stage for the big race today (Monday) with 118
runners likely to be thinned out a little bit. The highest 28 in the weights
will contest the Gold Cup and the next 28 at Thursday’s 48 hour stage
will compete in the totesport Ayr Silver Cup on Friday.
Excellent fields are in prospect right across the three days and the in form
Frankie Dettori could make a trip north on Thursday to partner a Godolphin
horse in the SAGA 105.2 fm Handicap for the Kilkerran Cup. Both recent winner
Sanchi and Count Trevisio carry entries.
Ayr Racecourse Managing Director Richard Johnstone said : “We are all
looking forward to a great three days racing and the course is looking fantastic
at present. By holding a public draw for the Gold Cup we are adding a touch
of theatre to what is always a super race.
“And with the continued success of our Ladies Day Final on the Friday
and the welcome addition of SAGA 105.2 fm as raceday sponsors on Thursday the
scene is set for a terrific festival.”

Public Draw For Ayr Gold Cup 08/09/06
TRAINERS with runners in this year’s totesport Ayr Gold Cup will be
able to chose the stall their horse runs from providing they have the luck
of the draw !
For the first time ever Europe’s richest sprint handicap with a prizefund
of £120,000 (£70,000 to the winner) will have a Public Draw which
takes place in the paddock at Ayr at 11.00 am on Thursday.
All 28 runners’ names will go into the hat and when a horse is drawn
out the trainer or their representative will be given a minute to decide the
stall they want their horse to run from.
Ayr based trainer Linda Perratt and a still to be confirmed personality will
make the draw which should add even more excitement to the occasion.
The meeting starts on Thursday with the SAGA 105.2fm raceday and runs until
Saturday when the Gold Cup takes centre stage. Advance ticket sales have been
excellent and a crowd of around 12,000 is expected on the Saturday.
Another highlight of the week is the Ladies Day Final on Friday when 28 finalists
will each draw a number of a horse corresponding to a runner in the day’s
big race - the totesport Ayr Silver Cup.
The lady with the number of the winning horse will claim a Volkswagen Golf
Sport 1.6 FSI three door from the Ingram Motoring Group of Ayr worth a whopping £16,000.
Runner up wins a holiday for four to Orlando courtesy of Stewart Travel of
Prestwick and Icelandair and third prize is a set of Marco Bicego 18ct white
gold jewellery worth £2200 from Ogham Jewellery of Ayr and Edinburgh.
Quito winning the 2003 Ayr Gold Cup
|
Former Winner Quito Heads Ayr Gold Cup Weights 24/08/06
QUITO, a former winner of the race, heads the weights for the totesport
Ayr Gold Cup which will be run on 16th September 2006.
Quito landed the 2003 running of the race under Tony Culhane and has
been allocated 9st 12lb – 7lb more than the next three in the weights
which are David Evans The Kiddykid, Jim Goldie’s veteran Orientor
and the ante post joint favourite Borderlescott from Robin Bastiman’s
yard. The other joint favourite James Fanshawe’s Firenze is set
to carry 8st 13lb.
There is a total of 129 entries for the race – Europe’s richest
sprint handicap – which is 25 down on last year but trainer Dandy
Nicholls who has won four of the last six runnings of the race forgot
to enter 26 horses for the race.
Other notable entries include Clive Brittain’s Excusez Moi (9st
4lb); Barry Hills Dabbers Ridge (9st 2lb); David Barker’s Mecca’s
Mate (9st); Out After Dark (9st) from the Clive Cox yard and Ian Semple’s
Appalachian Trail (8st 13lb).
Ayr trainer Linda Perratt has only one entry in Ptarmigan Ridge but with
a weight of only 7st its unlikely the veteran will get a run with a place
in the totesport Silver Cup a possibility.
Latest betting is 8 Borderlescott, Firenze; 12 Dabbers Ridge, Excusez
Moi, Mutamared; 14 Burning Incense; 16 Wyatt Earp, Zidane.
Ayr Racecourse managing director Richard Johnstone said : “Because
of the Dandy Nicholl’s error entries are a little down but there
is still quality in abundance and I’m sure we’ll have the
maximum fields of 28 runners in both the Gold and Silver Cups.”
