Dashel Drasher is set to make his seasonal reappearance, marking his return to chasing. The 11-year-old hasn't been seen since his last run in the Aintree Hurdle in April. Trainer Jeremy Scott believes that going back to the bigger obstacles can rejuvenate the popular gelding.
Dashel Drasher has primarily been campaigned over hurdles for the past two years and last tackled fences in December 2022, finishing second to Noble Yeats in the Many Clouds Chase. He boasts three wins from five starts over fences at Ascot, including a notable Grade One victory in the 2021 Ascot Chase.
Scott said, "I think the two-five round Ascot suits him very well. We obviously want quite a lot of give in the ground, but rain is forecast, so I'm hopeful the ground conditions will improve for him. He often needs his first run, but he's in very good form. We're about three weeks later than we would have liked, purely because we've been waiting for the right ground. He's pretty straight, so it will be interesting to see him back over fences."
He continued, "We take each race as it comes. He's not improving at his age, and if we struggle or he doesn’t enjoy it, we’ll reassess after each race. At home, he shows all the enthusiasm he’s always had, so I’m optimistic that mixing hurdling and chasing, mainly chasing, could rejuvenate his fortunes."
Looking ahead, Scott added, "Our immediate plan includes this race or possibly the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle. If ground conditions aren't suitable at either location, we might consider the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury during the Hennessy meeting, which he won last year."
