Pic D’Orhy joined the ranks of Paul Nicholls' previous champions, Master Minded and Al Ferof, by becoming a dual winner of the Copybet 1965 Chase at Ascot. Though the 4-9 favourite did not win as comfortably as expected, he managed to secure the victory.
Harry Cobden employed his usual front-running tactics with the nine-year-old, and for most of the race, things went according to plan. However, approaching the second last fence, both Dashel Drasher and 25-1 outsider Hidden Depths closed in, making Pic D’Orhy appear vulnerable. A strong leap over the second last fence helped keep his challengers at bay, and once he regained momentum, he pulled away to win by three and a half lengths.
Pic D’Orhy now looks to be a prime candidate for Windsor’s major event when jumps racing resumes there. Nicholls commented, "It’s a nice start to the season. Johnny (de la Hey, owner) and I have discussed supplementing him into the King George, and there’s a new race at Windsor. He keeps winning, and we could do with a yard full like him. Captain Teague, also owned by De la Hey, is entered at Newbury. Pic D’Orhy will definitely get three miles, and there are lots of nice races for him. That Windsor race would be a real target as it’s a big pot."
Cobden added, "I wish we had more like him. He’s not a champion but he’s a very good horse. I’d love to own him; he wins a lot of money every year. He just needed a breather going to the second last but managed to jump it well and won nicely in the end. He’s more laid back these days and takes a bit more work to get fit. It’s a lovely first run of the season."
