King Turgeon put in a sterling performance to emerge as the deserving winner. David Pipe's six-year-old, who won by a considerable margin on his seasonal reappearance at Chepstow, established an early prominent position under Jack Tudor over the National fences.
Despite briefly conceding the lead to Frero Banbou after the sixth last, King Turgeon regained command heading towards the final two obstacles. Two excellent jumps solidified his advantage, and the 9-2 shot maintained his lead to the finish, winning by three and a quarter lengths from the fast-finishing Vintage Fizz.
Reflecting on the race, Tudor said, “He travelled and jumped beautifully. Getting passed at the Canal Turn allowed me to conserve energy, and from then on, he just kept galloping. His asset today was his exceptional jumping, especially over these fences. It's a tremendous thrill to have my first winner over the Grand National fences.”
Pipe expressed his delight, “I am thrilled for everyone at the yard. This is a significant win for Pond House and the owners, Somerset Racing. We had this race in mind for a while, and knowing he had schooled well over a Grand National fence at home, we felt he had a chance. Jack rode him fantastically.”
Vintage Fizz's trainer, Jedd O’Keeffe, was overjoyed with the second-place finish and is already planning a return to Aintree in the spring. “That was an outstanding run for us. Conor O’Farrell gave him a lovely ride, and he got into a great rhythm. This race had been a target for some time, and we were fortunate with the ground conditions. The Topham Chase in the spring and this race next year are his targets if the ground suits him. The Becher Chase would be too far, so he’ll now have a break and return in the spring.”
