The Difference Between Inside and Outside bets in Roulette

Roulette is a game that many players will recognise from its iconic spinning wheel and numerous numbered pockets. Like plenty of other classic casino games, Roulette has stood the test of time thanks to its streamlined gameplay and straightforward core concept.

But there are a few things in a game of online Roulette that can trip up players who aren’t used to all the specific terminology surrounding elements of the game. Perhaps the most important of these to understand are the different types of bets available, which are divided between inside and outside bets.

So, let’s take a look at what exactly inside and outside bets are, as well as what makes the two types distinct from each other.

Inside bets

First up are the inside bets. This is the category for wagers placed on specific numbers or small groups of numbers, all found on the innermost section of Roulette’s printed table layout.

Inside bets offer higher payouts compared to outside bets, but this is because there is a lower probability of the ball landing on a specific number or combination.

These wagers are divided into a few types, which are:

• Straight-up – placed on a single number, which offers the highest potential payout of 35 to 1.
• Split – placed on two adjacent numbers, set on the line between them on the table layout.
• Street – placed on a row of three consecutive numbers, shown by placing a chip at the end of the row.
• Corner – placed on four numbers forming a square on the layout, indicated by placing a chip at the central intersection of the square.
• Six line – placed on six consecutive numbers made up of two adjacent rows.

As inside bets cover fewer numbers, up to a maximum of six, this means that they carry lower odds of landing. Still, the house edge remains the same no matter the type of wager that players choose to make.

Outside bets

Unlike inside bets, outside bets are placed on larger groups of numbers, pocket characteristics or specific sections of the wheel. These sit around the outer area of the table layout, which is where the name comes from.In many ways, outside bets are the opposite of inside bets, as they have a higher probability of landing but lower potential payouts.
The major types of outside bets include:

• Red/black – based on whether the ball will stop in a pocket that’s red or black.
• Odd/even – based on whether the ball will land on an odd or even number.
• High/low – based on whether the ball will land on a number that’s low (between 1-18) or high (between 19-36).
• Dozens – placed on one of three groups of 12 numbers (1-12, 13,24 or 25-36)
• Columns – placed on one of the three vertical number columns shown on the table layout, each of which covers 12 numbers.

Depending on the type of outside bet, players could be staking their wager on up to half of the Roulette wheel’s pockets at once.

There are some very definite differences between inside and outside bets, even though they are mechanically played out the same way. Still, understanding the two is important for players who want to make informed decisions when playing Roulette.
